Fwd: Christmas with Louise (a blow-up doll at Christmas; havoc ensues.) (Dec 13 2004 19:59 GMT) - This is an article submitted to a 1999 Louisville Sentinel contest to find out who had the wildest Christmas dinners. This won first prize. Christmas With Louise As a joke, my brother used to hang a pair of panty hose over his fireplace before Christmas. He said all he wanted was for Santa to fill them. What they say about Santa checking the list twice must be true because every Christmas morning, although Jay's kids' stockings were overflowed, his poor pantyhose hung sadly empty. |

'Missing man' in de herhaling (Dec 13 2004 19:59 GMT) - De 'missing man formatie' die door 3 F16's en een Spitfire boven de Nieuwe Kerk in Delft werd uitgevoerd ter ere van de overleden Prins Bernhard is kennelijk een zeldzame publieke vertoning. Via het NOS-dossier van het overlijden en de bijzetting is een vrij gedetailleerd videofragment van de 'missing man' hier terug te zien (Windows Media-link).... |

Should the U.S. Allow Region Coding? (Dec 13 2004 19:58 GMT) - On Friday I wrote about DVD region coding, which allows the manufacture of DVDs that (in theory) can only be played in certain regions of the world. U.S. public policy, in the form of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), plays an important role in shoring up the region coding mechanism. Is this good public policy? |

Frost at Meridiani (Dec 13 2004 19:57 GMT) - Frost on Mars Rover Opportunity 12/13/04 Frost can form on surfaces if enough water is present and the temperature is sufficiently low. On each of NASA's Mars Exploration Rovers, the calibration target for the panoramic camera provides a good place to look for such events. A thin frost was observed by Opportunity's panoramic camera on the rover's 257th sol (Oct. 13, 2004) 11 minutes after sunrise (left image). The presence of the frost is most clearly seen on the post in the center of the target, particularly when compared with the unsegmented outer ring of the target, which is white. |

Unlocking the mysteries of ancient potters (Dec 13 2004 19:57 GMT) - From Science Daily: McMaster Researchers Seek To Unlock The Mysteries Of Ancient Potters. In a remote village in southwestern Italy, Kostalena Michelaki stands over an open flame firing pots as would have been done more than seven thousand years ago. By looking even deeper into the clay shards, the McMaster archaeologist will begin to understand the way Neolithic people lived, and in the process will dispel the myths and stereotypes surrounding ancient societies.
