Critical Patch to the XP SP2 Firewall Released (Dec 15 2004 23:45 GMT) - Via SANS Internet Storm Center comes this Microsoft KB 886185 which discusses a critical patch that wasn't mentioned in yesterday's release: After you set up Microsoft Windows Firewall in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), you may discover that your computer can be accessed by anyone on the Internet when you use a dial-up connection to connect to the Internet This problem occurs because of the way that Windows Firewall interprets local subnets when the "My network (subnet) only" option is used. Windows Firewall is included with Windows XP SP2 Because of the way that some dialing software configures routing tables, Windows Firewall in Windows XP SP2 can sometimes interpret the whole Internet to be a local subnet. This can let anyone on the Internet access the Windows Firewall exceptions. When the "My network (subnet) only" option is enabled, it is automatically selected for file and print sharing. |

MG4 (Dec 15 2004 23:44 GMT) - Mike Garrigan is something of a music industry veteran. Stints in modern rock outfits Collapsis and Athenaeum as well as a career as a solo artist have provided the singer/songwriter/musician with a rich seam of experience in what is a cut-throat industry. With the release of his new band’s EP, he tells Andrew Ellis why he's back in front of the mic again. |

Unpopular opinions: nationalism, tech support, and the global economy (Dec 15 2004 23:41 GMT) - One of the common things to complain about in the computer industry is the fact that large chunks of phone-based tech support are getting outsourced to countries such as India. The usual complaint is, "Since workers over there will work for less money, it's cheaper and companies are wanting to do that, which takes jobs away from workers in the United States." I am really not thrilled with the argument that takes the form, "Buying things that are made in other countries is not good because it supports the people who work in those countries, and not the people working in our own country," because I think that the premise supporting the argument, the nationalistic premise that it is better to support people in one's own country (usually, the unspoken commentary is that this good outweighs concerns about the quality of their work) rather than people living in a different country. I think that the United States is currently living unsustainably, and I furthermore have gathered the impression that many products made to be marketed at the States are made poorly, with little regard for long-term use, but with much attention paid to the appearance. My sense of fair play is annoyed that poverty-level existence in the United States is unimaginable riches to people in developing countries. |

Controlling public opinion: What Beijing wants the people to hear (Dec 15 2004 23:41 GMT) - One of the common accusation made against the media in China, is that it is very selective about the news that it prints, and that it conceals elements of stories that disagree with the line issued by Beijing on specific issues or that may contradict ?accepted? facts, particularly about Chinese history and politics. One of the areas that this selective media is most in evident is with reporting on neighboring Japan, |
