The Treasury Department's office that enforces embargoes against those countries issued a rule that lists the permissible activities related to the publishing and marketing of manuscripts, books, journals and newspapers in paper... |

Los Van Van still performing Cuban music after 35 years (Dec 16 2004 02:59 GMT) - By Anthony Boadle | Reuters From the first note of the piano and the clang of the cow bell, thousands of hips start to gyrate and the party begins on Havana's Malecon ocean front. Cuba's popular salsa band, Los Van Van, has been playing for 35 years and they are still the hottest dance number in town, drawing 5,000 people of all ages to an open-air birthday bash. As the rum flows, couples spin around to the fast-paced steps of timba, Cuba's frenetic polyrhythmic version of salsa... |

U.S. blasts Venezuela-Cuba ties (Dec 16 2004 02:59 GMT) - UPI The U.S. State Department said Wednesday it was "troubled" by Venezuela's economic pact with Cuba. The comments came after Venezuela and Cuba signed an economic integration agreement and Caracas adopted internal measures similar to... |

Compound fracture (Dec 16 2004 02:59 GMT) - A few years ago, I picked up a drop-leaf end table at the annual Bryant Homestead craft festival. It’s been useful for holding phones and plants and things, and a few days ago A. started using it as a temporary laptop desk in front of the couch. And then last night I noticed that one of the legs, which has a pretty good sized knot in it, has split almost completely through at the knot. |

Limitation in SQL's XML Support (Dec 16 2004 02:57 GMT) - I managed to outsmart myself again.... I've been working on an application that processes large XML files. One of the routines involves passing the XML to a stored procedure, which then inserts certain parts of the XML into various tables. |

Cell Phones On Airplanes: Trouble Brewing (Wednesday, Dec 15) (Dec 16 2004 02:55 GMT) - As many of you have no doubt heard or read, the FCC is considering allowing people to use cell phones on airplanes. I have mixed feelings about this. Initially, my only thought was how unbelievably annoying it would be for half the people on an airplane to be screaming into their cell phones at once, within the cramped confines of a jet, for 2 or 3 hours. Think of how chafed you get when just a couple of people near you on a plane have a loud conversation, and then multiply that by 50. Even if the passengers could take it, the flight crews would start raging like third-shift postal workers. |

Too Lazy to Change the MotherFOXing Channel? (Dec 16 2004 02:55 GMT) - The FOXBlocker (via The Decadent West) is a beauty of capitalism intended to be bought by brainwashed lefties (read: socialists who hate commercialism) who hate right-wingers (read: fascist capitalists who flaunt commercialism). Ah, irony is not a lost art: FOXBlocker is an innovative new product that filters out the FOX News network. |
