Yesterday - imitating Monte (Dec 17 2004 02:58 GMT) - I do not understand how Monte finds all of his wonderful subjects, but this rusting memory of yesterday in rapidly exploding Loudon County, VA, immediately made me think of his work. I should add that the photogrpher's eye responsible for this picture came from my professional artist wife. Damn! |

Sneeky Cheap (Dec 17 2004 02:55 GMT) - There are lots of crafty things people do to save money. Some are good ideas, some are lousy ideas, and some are downright criminal. Below is a list of these things, beginning at the top with "eating the free food at an art opening," which I consider to be completely acceptable, to "writing the wrong room number on the hotel bar tab," which is plain thievery. |

Without an Education, Will Techies Go Far Enough? (Dec 17 2004 02:54 GMT) - For this article, I am standing firmly on a soap box. The Associated Press reported, today, on a few information technologist that are doing well in their young careers, so well, in fact, that they each hope to retire before reaching middle age, and they attained their success without a formal higher education. This article struck a raw chord with me, because I emphasize the value of formal education to all of the students whom I teach, including those seeking a B.S. in information technology (IT) and those pursuing a M. |

O'Reilly the Coward (Dec 17 2004 02:52 GMT) - David Brock takes aim and scores a direct hit:Mr. O'Reilly, you have repeatedly and personally attacked me, Media Matters for America, and my fine staff, calling us "vile," "despicable," and "weasels," and comparing us to the Ku Klux Klan, Castro, Mao, and the Nazis. And you have refused my repeated requests to appear on your broadcast. You once offered your viewers your definition of the word "coward. |

Sirota: Debunking Centrism; Blanchard (Dec 17 2004 02:52 GMT) - David Sirota writes:Looking out over Washington, DC, from his plush office, Al From is once again foaming at the mouth. The CEO of the corporate-sponsored Democratic Leadership Council and his wealthy cronies are in their regular postelection attack mode. Despite wins by economic populists in red states like Colorado and Montana this year, the DLC is claiming like a broken record that progressive policies are hurting the Democratic Party. From's group is funded by huge contributions from multinationals like Philip Morris, Texaco, Enron and Merck, which have all, at one point or another, slathered the DLC with cash. |

The new western battleground (Dec 17 2004 02:52 GMT) - The south is, no doubt, increasingly hostile territory for Democrats.President Bush dominated the South so completely in last month's presidential election that he carried nearly 85% of all the counties across the region -- and more than 90% of counties where whites are a majority of the population, according to a Times analysis of election results and census data. The Times' analysis, which provides the most detailed picture yet of the vote in Southern communities, shows that Bush's victory was even more comprehensive than his sweep of the region's 13 states would suggest [...] In Southern counties without a substantial number of African American or Latino voters, Bush virtually obliterated Kerry. Across the 11 states of the old Confederacy, plus Kentucky and Oklahoma, whites constitute a majority of the population in 1,154 counties. |
