Persian bloggers on: How to make a blogosphere (Dec 17 2004 23:41 GMT) - The Global Voices Draft manifesto that Joi Ito blogged today led me to this practical guide to an aspect of smartmobbing: How to make a blogosphere: The success of Iranians in creating a hyper-active blogosphere in their own language could be implemented by other developing countries. Weblogs have had social, political, and journalistic functions in Iran, a country run by an authoritarian, Islamic regime. Studying the process of forming such online community can help many in developing countries to shape their own version of blogosphere. |

Information for First Time Home Buyers? (Dec 17 2004 23:40 GMT) - Quote: "And Bill, I knew you weren't a real estate law particularly, but I also knew you'd know the types of places to start looking - I also really appreciate the fact that you typed in a few of those search terms and came up with some specific local info for us - that was far above the call of duty and I owe ya one." Glad to be able to help. :) Buying a home is one of the most serious legal obligations that a person can get involved with, and can be pretty complicated. |

Phil's talking point: should Turkey join the EU? [Phil Woodford] (Dec 17 2004 23:40 GMT) - If I'd been blogging ten years ago, I would have said no. Almost exclusively on the grounds of Turkey's very poor human rights record over a large number of years. My impression is that big strides have been made on this front, even if there are still issues that need addressing. Given that the war on terror is likely to continue for a generation at least, my feeling is that it would be very good to involve a nation with a largely Muslim population in the EU. It's important for Western Europe to demonstrate that we have no argument with the Islamic faith - only with extremists who use it as a cloak to pursue acts of violence. |

Cell Phones on Planes? Bring it on! (Dec 17 2004 23:40 GMT) - Amid all of the hubbub regarding the possibility of competitive cell phone carriers on airplanes, a number of people have commented on the fact that they don't want to be stuck on a long flight sitting next to someone who's gabbing on the phone. These people are awfully short-sighted. It's not about talking on a cell phone. It's about data. The possibilities for data exchange are pretty much endless -- it would enable Internet access and everything that goes along with that. |

Eyeballing the Iraq Kill Zone (Dec 17 2004 23:40 GMT) - Head on over to Cryptome and look at the "Eyeballing the Iraq Kill Zone" for pictures and coverage of Iraq that you probably won't find elsewhere. John Young does a great job in collecting all of this information. |

Sequencing Matters (Dec 17 2004 23:40 GMT) - When making Rice-a-Roni, the powder goes after the water. Otherwise, you've just dumped powder into a hot, dry pan, and it will burn. This makes your Rice-a-Roni taste a bit like ash. Unless you're going for some kind of Mount St. Helens-themed kind of dish, in which case go powder-first and you can't lose. |
