Rumsfeld faces Iraq letters row (Dec 20 2004 02:58 GMT) - US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has pledged to personally sign letters of condolence to the families of American soldiers killed in action. He spoke shortly after his admission that he had used a machine to sign letters to relatives of more than 1,000 troops killed in Iraq and Afghanistan... ...In a statement to the US military newspaper Stars and Stripes, Mr Rumsfeld tacitly admitted that in the past he had not personally signed the letters of condolence. "While I have not individually signed each one, in the interest of ensuring expeditious contact with grieving family members, I have directed that in the future I sign each letter," Mr Rumsfeld's statement said. |

CMS Users For a Better Tomorrow (Dec 20 2004 02:58 GMT) - Political Wire reblogs The Register's report of KE04 head of online communications Zach Exley's criticism of his party/campaign's Internet efforts, and it's worth noting. The technology powering this year's campaigns failed in no small part because it was so self-conscious, so heavily reported-on and talked-about. If the medium is the message heard, the message transmitted got lost. Of course, the message this round of Democrats was transmitting wasn't worth hearing anyway. |

How Do You Feel About Cell Phones being used on planes? (Dec 20 2004 02:58 GMT) - There is a little device on the market(wont say which market) but it works wonders for this matter(looks like a car alarm device). The basic's is it scrambles the incoming calls so it make's it impossible to talk (does not interfere with the plane navigation and such) cost is about US 200.00. It's a blast to hear people say "Can you hear me now" from 25,000 feet or more. I had a ball with it on the last flight I took to Japan for a company meeting. |

Palestinians Reject Violence Again (Dec 20 2004 02:56 GMT) - It's not worth a headline to the major media, but buried in this AFP article about Abu Mazen "briefing" the dictator of Oman is the important revelation that Abu Mazen's call to "stop the violence" has been rejected not only by Hamas (as expected), but by the suicide bomber wing ... |

Chenango Canal (Dec 20 2004 02:55 GMT) - The Chenango Canal connected Utica and Binghampton in New York State from 1837 to 1878. The Canal was first seriously proposed in 1826. It was thought even then that a role of government was to help businesses, so the promoters of the Canal introduced a bill in the New York State legislature for seven years, until in 1833 the amount of $1,000,000 was authorized for the building of the canal. The frequent reader of this blog will not be surprised to find that the canal cost over $2,500,000 to complete. Moreover, counting the cost of operation, interest on the bonds, plus a failed bid to extend the canal by 33 miles, the total cost of the Canal was $6,871,209. |
