Penguin suit (Dec 21 2004 00:59 GMT) - I own a tuxedo, which is unusual these days. Back in 1995, when my wife and I were married, I decided that, since renting a tux is so expensive (three rentals or so and you may as well have bought), I'd purchase a classic design and be done with it. In the intervening years, I've has few occasions to wear it, so when the invitation for my daughters' piano recital last Sunday said "formal," I went for it. It turned out that only one of the five-year-old students and I went that far, but it was nice to be gussied up. And it led to a funny story. |

Deutsche Reichsbahn (Dec 21 2004 00:59 GMT) - Deutsche Reichsbahn. An amazing website about 1930's German Railway: advertising, collector's card albums [1, 2], more advertising - anyway, it's exhausting. And fantastic. The main page is here. |

CA Court Strikes Blow Against Hidden EULAs (Dec 21 2004 00:58 GMT) - vsprintf writes "Ed Foster's Gripelog has a story on California's ruling against some of our favorite software producers and software retailers. EULAs inside the shrinkwrap are no longer good enough. Retailers with rules against accepting returns of open software could be in for hefty fines or settlements. Finally, a break for the buyer. May this spread quickly to other states. |

"We'll figure out how to monetize it later" (Dec 21 2004 00:57 GMT) - [Meerkat: An Open Wire Service] - That's a quote in today's USA Today from Lars Perkins, product manager for Picasa, Google's recently acquired photo software. It's a sentiment that rests deep in Google DNA - make the product first, figure out the business case later. It worked for the original Google service, and it's clearly guiding Print, Orkut, Froogle, and News (though some of those of course are supported by advertising). I don't have the answer to this question, but it's worth raising - how long can this approach to the w... |
