Iraq's library struggles to rise from the ashes (Dec 21 2004 14:59 GMT) - The Guardian Reports The daylight burning of the library, which the invading US military did not protect, was one of the first costly failures in the post-war chaos of occupation last year. Now it is slowly being restored. But in a country where recent history remains bitterly disputed, resurrecting the library and national archive has turned into a remarkably sensitive and political operation. |

"Dark Alleys" on the Internet (Dec 21 2004 14:59 GMT) - nokilli writes "Sounding the alarmist tone many of us became used to in the early days of the web, The New York Times has a story that talks about "national security" concerns over the myriad ways in which two people (i.e., terrorists) can communicate using the Internet today [NYT=Kneel before Zod]. They're talking about monitoring chat rooms, email servers, etc. I'd like to see how they plan on monitoring my mage as it talks to your cleric in some obscure, nearly impossible to reach (unless you're level 50) corner of our favorite MUD. |

The market likes open source consulting (Dec 21 2004 14:58 GMT) - Andy has already mentioned the article on the Defence Academy and Zope/Plone. Alex pointed out to me a particularly relevant part: "The Ministry of Defence's Defence Academy made a "double win" of 30% cheaper consultancy rates for developers and quicker development by using Zope/Plone and open source email server and authentication software. The Academy felt open source software was "inherently more secure" and said the nature of the community made it easier to find good developers." |

(un)professional: plain text vs. html email (Dec 21 2004 14:57 GMT) - Server blocks the majority of spam but i still get 10-20 spam emails a day, with the large number of accounts i have i don’t think that’s too bad. Problem with html emails is the tracking codes on image urls which let the spammer know they have a working email address. Having html emails off is just an extra security precautions with outlook. Even though i have anti-virus software on the server, on my pc and firewall, there are always some users who first get hit my a new virus or exploit, I’m just limiting the risk. If i setup a PC for someone i do they same for them as i’ll be the one they call when it goes pear shaped. |

Don't Misunderstand Darwin... (Dec 21 2004 14:57 GMT) - Just wanted to make a small point about Frans Bourmas latest post. Which has really fired up some people, BTW. Good post, but classic Darwinism may be misrepresented here. Don't get me wrong, I think that Darwinism is at play here, AND that Firefox is superior in many ways BUT, that IE May still win out, even in it's current incarnation. |
