What's for dinner? (Dec 21 2004 19:38 GMT) - A man goes to the doctor and says, "I don't think my wife's hearing is as good as it used to be. What should I do?" The doctor replies, "Try this test to find out for sure. When your wife is in the kitchen cooking, stand four metres behind her and ask her a question. Just in time for New Year's: A proposal for a better calendar (Dec 21 2004 19:38 GMT) - No more '30 days hath September, April, June and November'Wouldn't it be convenient if your birthday, Christmas and the Fourth of July -- not to mention most other major holidays -- all fell on the same day of the week, year after year? Wouldn't it make life -- or at least planning -- easier, for instance, to know that Dec. 17 would always fall on a Saturday or that January 1 -- New Year's Day -- would always be celebrated on a Sunday? Richard Conn Henry, professor in the Henry A. Rowland Department of Physics and Astronomy at The Johns Hopkins University, thinks it would. |

eBay item Alien Bacteria and Haunted Outer Space Grandpa Ghost (Dec 21 2004 19:37 GMT) - If that title isn't confusing enough, check out this eBay auction for Alien Bacteria and Haunted Outer Space Grandpa Ghost. I'm still not sure what's being sold here - it looks to me liek someone has bid $575 for an envelope of air. I can't describe this auction properly without resoting to quoting from the page so here's a choice snippet; "I...spilled some of the "Magic Air" on my left foot. |

Christmas Dinner At Les Halles (Dec 21 2004 19:37 GMT) - Following up on Ask Gothamist's advice on Christmas menus at city restaurants, Gothamist wants to share some of the delights of the Les Halles Christmas Dinner. Perhaps based on our serious obsession with Les Halles executive chef Anthony Bourdain, we were invited to try some of the Christmas menu, which has a delicious rosted goose (Oie aux Deux Façon, Côtes de Bettes à la Landaise) as a main course. However, we must admit, the suprise appearance of Bourdain sent us into a frenzy of questions and borderline coherent babbling. [Photo below of Bourdain surrounded by Les Halles chef and a server] This is a placeholder. |

Acupuncture proven to work! (Dec 21 2004 19:36 GMT) - NIH has just published the results of the "largest, longest, and most rigorous study of acupuncture" ever conducted. A group of 570 patients received one of three treatments: 23 sessions of either acupuncture or sham acupuncture over 26 weeks (twice a week during the first 8 weeks then down to once a month by the 14th week), or arthritis education. "For the first time, a clinical trial with sufficient rigor, size, and duration has shown that acupuncture reduces the pain and functional impairment of osteoarthritis of the knee," said Stephen E. Straus, |
