I Think Ticket Prices Should be $4.20 for This (Dec 23 2004 00:57 GMT) - Heres a pre-release review of the upcoming Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie. In a nutshell: damned funny. This is one of those "good buzz" things you want to hear before a film is released, and gives me cause to move the flick into my "might not suck" category. This is a Good Thing. |

Paging Ellen Ripley, White Courtesy Phone Please (Dec 23 2004 00:57 GMT) - Ok, I definitely gotta get me one of these: The 26-year-old [Carlos] Owens is an Anchorage-area steelworker by day. In his own time, he's hoping to become the creator of a true "mecha"--not a robot, exactly, but a gigantic exoskeleton that can transform its wearer's motions into eight-foot strides and the devastating sweep of a steel fist. |

Nemesis: Get Well Vader (Death Metal Mayhem) (Dec 23 2004 00:55 GMT) - Fucking sweet! Too bad about Doc, he was one of my favorite drummers ever. 'The Nomad' had a sweet fucking sound to it, with that light cymbal sound in the back ground. Hopefully he'll return to the Polish death metal beast sometime soon.Until then, Daray kicks ass as well. |

Fun With Pseudofluids (Dec 23 2004 00:54 GMT) - You probably knew that Silly Putty is a non-Newtonian fluid, and that Faraday waves make cornstarch and water do creepy things, but did you know that your washing machine probably has magnetorheological fluid in it? Yes indeed, there are fun and interesting applications for ferrofluids. |

Saudatu Mahdi, one of the women of the year (Dec 23 2004 00:54 GMT) - One of Ms Magazine's women of the year (see also this press release) is Saudatu Mahdi, a women's rights activist from Nigeria. Her biggest claim to fame is helping to secure the acquittal of Amina Lawal. Saudatu believes that justice can be obtained by working within the Islamic legal system rather than by abandoning it: "Even though the Nigerian women would like to tell the world that yes the pressure assisted Amina and them, we on the ground insisted on using the legal interpretations of Sharia to acquit Amina," says Saudatu Shehu Mahdi. Mahdi is the Secretary General and member of the Board of Trustees to Women's Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA). |

MS releases stripped down OS next month (Dec 23 2004 00:53 GMT) - The lines between application and operating system can be pretty blurred sometimes, and the applications that come with an operating system can be helpful and convenient. Not to be Microsoft's advocate (would that be playing devil's advocate), but I would be pretty upset if I loaded up an operating system and it didn't have notepad, wordpad, paint, a few games, a way to play CDs, and some other applications that aren't necessarily needed to run hardware. And while it is easy to be tempted to use what you have installed on your computer, it isn't too hard these days to visit the site of someone who makes a good product and download their software. Where does that line get drawn? |
