Night at the Hip Hopera... (Dec 23 2004 01:44 GMT) - Recently, I came across A Night at the Hip Hopera. It's 25 years of Queen meets 25 years of Hip Hop... and creates something recognizable, yet entirely different. It's not really a mashup, as much as a bizarre remix (strangely akin to those awful extended-medley Ultimix records in the clubs in the late 80s)... and the sheer variety of both the hip-hop material and the ~3 second drop-ins and breaks is truely amazing. |

Modern Times (Dec 23 2004 01:43 GMT) - Modern Times Heart warming, well-designed poster artwork. The movie "Modern Times", the ironical masterpiece created by Charlie Chaplin, describes how capitalism sometimes causes a kind of unreasonable sorrow among people. Its soundtrack is also superb. The track "Smile", composed by... |

Death contrary to conventional wisdom ... (Dec 23 2004 01:43 GMT) - Death contrary to conventional wisdom Everybody's heard that dying people sometimes are able to hold out for their birthday or a major holiday, but one study now challenges that belief. Donn Young, from Ohio State University's Comprehensive Cancer Center analyzed death certificate data from 1,269,479 persons dying in Ohio from 1989 to 2000, including data from more than 300,000 cancer deaths. Researchers report no trend to indicate patients can somehow put off death immediately before major holidays or life events. "We would've seen a trend, and there just wasn't any," said Young, co-author if the study which appears in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Not that this will stop people believing in it. |

Email marketing pros/cons, best/worst (Dec 23 2004 01:42 GMT) - For newsletter lists, there are several things to avoid (although some are very tempting). I'm sure many people in this forum run some sort of newsletter campaign either by themselves or through a service. What type of email newsletter are you sending out and to what kind of people are you targeting to reach? Sending out newsletters to 1000+ people is fine if you have their approval. It's just like a poorly planned pop-up ad campaign (cliche? |

Mental health department to get part of Medicare interest (Michigan) (Dec 23 2004 01:41 GMT) - Grand Rapids Press story - "Ottawa County officials have agreed to allow the county's Community Mental Health Department to begin collecting interest earned on revenues from Medicaid funding, instead of it being transferred to the county's general fund. However, Community Mental Health won't get that interest all at once. County commissioners have approved a proposal to implement allocation of the interest over a four-year period, starting with 25 percent of interest next year and increasing by that amount each year after. CMH will receive full interest funding from Medicaid revenues by 2008, Administrator Al Vanderberg said." |

Samizdata quote of the day (Dec 23 2004 01:40 GMT) - Self defence, wrote William Blackstone, the 18th-century jurist, is a "natural right that no government can deprive people of, since no government can protect the individual in his moment of need". This Government insists upon having a monopoly on the use of force, but can only impose it upon law-abiding people. By practically eliminating self defence, it has removed the greatest deterrent to crime: a people able to defend themselves. - Joyce Lee Malcolm... |

After a distinguished career in Canada and in the Peninsular War, he was called out of retirement in 1826 and sent to Canada to build the Rideau Canal waterway.... |
