Somewhere this Christmas [Kevin Marsdon] (Dec 23 2004 13:58 GMT) - I wrote this in order to remember those that live in unstable and uncertain circumstances, anywhere in the world, and share it with you in that spirit. Somewhere this Christmas Somewhere there’s a land where the snow gently falls Somewhere there’s a land where a shrill siren calls Somewhere there’s a street full of children all smiles Somewhere there’s a street where the bodies still lie Somewhere there’s a house presents stacked by the fire Somewhere there’s a house made of cardboard and tyres Somewhere there’s a child who’s awaiting the day Somewhere there’s a child seeing out their last day If you live in that land where the children can smile With presents and families and homes free from fear Remember the ones who must live in a time Of loss and of hunger, of suffering and tears if you feel inclined to pass it on please do so, all I ask is that you acknowledge the source. |

Rethinking childhood depression (Dec 23 2004 13:58 GMT) - Articlke in the British Medical Journal - "Increasing numbers of children are being treated for depression. At the end of 2003, over 50 000 children were prescribed antidepressants, and over 170 000 prescriptions a year for antidepressants were issued to people under 18 years old in the United Kingdom. Recent evidence has suggested that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are largely ineffective and may be dangerous in this age group. Older antidepressants have already been shown to have no beneficial effect in people under 18.4 So how did we get into this mess? |

Linux holds out against attackers (Dec 23 2004 13:57 GMT) - Unpatched Linux systems are surviving longer on the Internet before being compromised, according to a report from the Honeynet Project released this week. The data, from a dozen networks, showed that the average Linux system lasts three months before being compromised, a significant increase from the 72 hours life span of a Linux system in 2001. House Blinger (Dec 23 2004 13:54 GMT) - House Blinger is the UK version of the Showing Off site I posted the other day. If you missed that one the basic premise is bling up your house with Christmas decorations and submit a picture of it. There are none for Newcastle upon Tyne so whip your cameras out lads and get some submitted. After all the place that invented this year's most overused word (charver) shouldn't be lagging behind the rest of the country. via Councillor Bob Piper |
