washingtonpost.com: War Crimes (Dec 23 2004 14:59 GMT) - Even the Washington Post recognizes that the US is guilty of systematic war crimes in abuse and torture of prisoners. The Post takes it up to Rumsfeld but Bush too signed on; the criminals should be prosecuted, watch for Rumsfeld to be out sooner rather than later washingtonpost.com: War Crimes |

Ring of Nibelung (Dec 23 2004 14:59 GMT) - A new Ring has just begun at Covent Garden. A solemn and mmentous occasion, covered by all the quality newspapers. Over the enxt two seasons it will be slowly unveiled, culminating in a proper cycle in 2006/07. Portentiously, the Guardian even included it in the Comment Section, although rather snottily - strange how journalists, clearly living somewhere other than the real world focus on the £150 seats whereas over half are £50 or - significantly - less. Presumably it's infra dig for the stuck-up journos to mix with the ordinary working people, pensioners and students - music lovers - in the balcony, amphitheatre or slips. |

Urbanism in Ancient Peru (Dec 23 2004 14:58 GMT) - Archaeologists are digging into the Americas' oldest urban society: Three river valleys that cross the windblown desert of coastal Peru were once home to the earliest urban society yet found in the Americas, a set of cities with ceremonial complexes -- complete with pyramids -- far more extensive than the first excavations suggested, archaeologists reported yesterday. Researchers said recently completed radiocarbon tests at 13 large sites in Peru's Norte Chico region showed that the cities were occupied for 1,200 years by relatively sophisticated communities beginning around 3000 B.C., making the civilization as old as ancient Egypt's. |
