The wrath of the law ... (Dec 23 2004 20:25 GMT) - The wrath of the law - Norwegian style In 1994, now 27-year-old Chris Brynthe Torp was sentenced to 14 years in prison for murdering 49-year-old Hans Arne Grøndahl on a ferry between Denmark and Norway. Normally, this convicted murderer would have been out of prison by now, since if conduct is otherwise good, criminals serve only roughly two-thirds of their sentences in Norway. But Torp's conduct has not been exemplary. In 1999, he failed to return from a leave. |

Self-Policing a Success (Dec 23 2004 20:24 GMT) - The game industry is looking very pleased with the rating system that has been in place for the last several years, stating that over three-quarters of parents who are doing/have completed this year's holiday shopping make sure to check the rating before purchasing a game for a young'un. However, Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich doesn't think it's good enough, and he very much wants to bring the hammer down on what he deems "violent videogames". Blagojevich hopes to persuade the Illinois legislature to enact laws that would make selling, renting or distributing violent or sexually explicit games to children younger than 18 a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in prison or a $5,000 fine. He also plans to use his own office to judge standards on which games would be deemed violent and sexually explicit. |
