Cameraphone Identity Theft Myth In The News Again (Dec 23 2004 22:39 GMT) - Earlier this year, we had a story about the possibility that someone might, possibly, maybe use a cameraphone to snap a photo of your credit card when you pulled it out to pay at the supermarket. There was no evidence that this was actually happening, and it seemed a bit far-fetched for a variety of reasons. One of Techdirt's readers even took out a fairly good cameraphone and tested it out, noting that it's impossible to accurately photograph a credit card with current cameraphone technology. That isn't to say this won't become an issue as the quality gets better -- and the quality has gotten better in the past year. However, there's still no evidence that this is really happened anywhere. |

The Dipolomads are on a Roll (Dec 23 2004 22:39 GMT) - First with this story about indigenous rights activists and then this tale of Best lines? The first is encapsulated in the words of a fellow Diplomad, who after years of listening to the pronouncements and viewing the activities of the "indigenous" rights crowd in Central America, said, "Well, it all comes down to the right to wear funny clothes." And that's just about all they have achieved. |

Copyright fees and libraries (Dec 23 2004 22:38 GMT) - Sometimes press releases draw attention to the darnest things... Hands up everyone who knew that an EU Directive requires that libraries pay fees to copyright holders based on materials borrowed? I'd been unaware of the requirement, though it is consistent with the European approach to copyright. The only reason the matter came to my attention was because the Irish government may have seriously messed up implementation of the directive. EU law is implemented in Ireland by being transposed into local law. |

Emergent Structure (Dec 23 2004 22:36 GMT) - Dave Pollard at How to Save the World has an interesting post on the tyranny of structurelessness in which he points to many earlier posts on his theory of democractic self-structuring organizations. I haven't yet read the posts he links to, so my comments below are only based on my intuitive understanding of the concepts, which may differ from reality. In essense, Mr. Pollard advocates collaboration within a group rather competition -- presumably competition between groups is desirable. He dislikes hierarchical structures and prefers egalitarianism, and in response to the various problems that prevent social groups from functioning this way... |

Some Quick Bitching (Dec 23 2004 22:36 GMT) - I am in a shitty ass mood today. Really. I am making Christmas cookies that are totally pissing me off and taking way too long. That totally sucks too, as I am a really good cook ... but sometimes, when I don't feel like cooking, my ability to cook takes a dive. |

All Eyes Back on Pinkston (Dec 23 2004 22:34 GMT) - Todd Pinkston is looking for redemption. Pinkston wants to prove his Eagles career won't be defined by one game or a couple of infamous non-catches. YACS has less bugs (supposedly) (Dec 23 2004 22:33 GMT) - Open-source advocates have stated for a long time that sharing source files had very good effects on program quality. This has been proven to be true for Linux. Moreover, while Stanford University computer science researchers have not looked at YACS yet, I'm pretty sure we are already doing better than usual commercial software. |
