- As it's the anniversary of the mad cow discovery in the USA, it's only fitting that we run fishie's submission, wherein one can read a food inspectors' union complaint that cow brains, spinal tissue and other "specified risk materials" from cows over 30 months old are making it into the human food chain. While it's kind of disgusting to even thing of brains and spinal tissue as food, they're also the highest-risk items for the transmission of the human form of mad cow disease. Inspectors concerned about the ages of cows coming down the line have allegedly been told to not worry about it - I guess worrying's being left as an exercise for the consumer. |

- According to an article sent in by NonDairyCreamer, some Iowa farmers have started feeding their cattle beer. It's actually beer that's been on the shelf too long for it to be sold to humans, but the cows apparently are liking it so much that they hesitate to eat food that isn't mixed with beer. When a human hesitates to eat his or her breakfast cereal unless there's a bottle of alcohol involved, we call it something else, but if you're worried about the ethical complications of getting cows hooked on booze, you could always skip the middleman... |

- Omnivores, if you think you're not eating rainforest beef, take a closer look. Rosemary sent in a ZNet article that takes a look at the impact of soy farming on the Amazon rainforest. I know, you think soy's a vegan thing, and you're all about the beef, but cows have to eat, and fears around mad cow disease has increased demand for soy-based feed, raising prices to a 15-year high in April (they've since receded.) There's also talk of a 1600 kilometer road cutting through the forest to facilitate soy exports, and hey, the governor of the region happens to be Brazil's largest soy producer. This news won't stop me from eating soy (I eat a smidge less than a cow does, even during the holidays), but it may provide some interesting dinner table discussion when we break out the stuffed tofu. |
