12-26-2004-Canada (Dec 26 2004 22:59 GMT) - please pray for little Brandie. She's a 10 year old maltapoo who recently lost her owner to cancer. Brandie is being cared for by my sister who has discovered that this dear little dog has stage 2 congestive heart failure. The daughter of the former owner was trying to fly this dog for approx 5 hours to another city. When told of Brandie's bad heart she said she might have her put down. |

MCE DVD Jukebox? (Dec 26 2004 22:58 GMT) - A friend turned me on to DVD Shrink, a tool ostensibly designed to let you back up those encrypted DVDs. One of the things it'll let you do is rip directly to the hard drive with no compression (again, you can't just copy to the hard drive, since the encryption gets in the way). Watching these things, they are expectedly the exact same quality as the original DVD; albeit, without encryption, and without Macrovision (which can really play havoc with some older line multipliers). That leads me to wonder about how inexpensively you could build a PC with enough storage to have as a DVD jukebox. |

Storage Costs Continue to Drop (Dec 26 2004 22:58 GMT) - After reading the /. story about IBM trying to build a 100TB tape drive, I found myself over on Pricewatch.com (which lamely uses frames and makes it hard to bookmark the page I want you to see). I like figuring out three things: Where's the current sweet spot in SATA drive prices? |

Homemade Hypercube Case (Dec 26 2004 22:58 GMT) - blkmagic writes "I have to say this is probably the most amazing homemade case I've seen. The HyperCube^2 was inspired by Vincenzo Natali's first film, Cube. This is a long article, so here's a link to the gallery of images of the final product. I read about this on CubeOwner.com, a Cube site with a slightly different focus. |

Ukraine: Exit Polls Show Yuschenko Wins By Comfortable Margin (Dec 26 2004 22:57 GMT) - Some news from the Ukraine: Three exit polls projected Ukrainian opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko the winner by a commanding margin over Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych in Sunday's fiercely fought presidential rematch. A glum-looking Yanukovych told reporters "if we fail, we will form a strong opposition." He did not concede defeat, saying "I am ready to lead the state" and hinted that he would challenge the results in court. The first official results are not expected until Monday morning. |

Thousands Killed by Tidal Waves and Earthquake (Dec 26 2004 22:57 GMT) - Reminding how little we understand about the mystery of life, two natural disasters, a series of tidal waves caused by a massive earthquake, have caused the deaths of thousands of innocent souls in India, Thailand, Indonesia and Sri Lanka, among other countries: The most powerful earthquake in 40 years struck south Asia this morning, triggering tsunamis that smashed into villages, resorts and tourist isles, killing thousands and leaving hundreds missing. Sri Lanka and India were hit hardest as the tsunamis, some 30 feet high, washed away fishermen, tourists, cars and beach side stalls. The earthquake that generated the waves hit at 6:58 a. |
