Spamfighting Since the Death of MakeLoveNotSpam? (Dec 27 2004 23:59 GMT) - vacuum_tuber asks: "The now-defunct Lycos anti-spamsite screen saver, MakeLoveNotSpam, was extremely well received despite the whines and hand wringing from the no-one-should-ever-actively-de crowd. There was speculation after its demise that Open Source spam-punishing tools would emerge. Other tools such as SpamVampire, LadVampire (punishes fake bank sites), Spam Research Tool and others were mentioned with increasing frequency, but there has been no coherent followup to gauge what people are doing since the death of the Lycos screen saver. What are you doing that you think is effective in punishing spammers or their spam-site sponsors? |

A war without a plan (Dec 27 2004 23:56 GMT) - Critics of Donald Rumsfeld's Department of Defense have long alleged that military planners didn't prepare for the occupation of Iraq, and now a military planner himself is saying the same thing. In an unpublished report, covered by the Washington Post, Maj. Isasiah Wilson III, a military historian who helped devise the Pentagon's Iraq strategy, writes that the Defense Department never had a plan for "Phase IV" -- the period of occupation and reconstruction that would, in theor... |

Scientists warn of Atlantic tidal wave which could devastate eastern US. (Dec 27 2004 23:56 GMT) - The bad news is tens of millions of people along the eastern seaboard of the United States and Canada may drown if the slow slippage of a volcano off north Africa becomes a cataclysmic collapse. But the good news is the world is not likely to be destroyed by an asteroid any time soon. Scientist Bill McGuire told a news conference on natural disasters on Monday that sometime in the next few thousand years the western flank of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Canary Island of La Palma will collap... |

Stickin' it to The Man (Dec 27 2004 23:54 GMT) - Quick, when someone mentions "the establishment" or "the man" which party comes to mind first. I suspect most people would say the Republican Party. Increasingly though, the reality is quite different. In the recent debate on social security reform, two... |
