Spamfighting Since the Death of MakeLoveNotSpam? (Dec 27 2004 23:59 GMT)

- vacuum_tuber asks: "The now-defunct Lycos anti-spamsite screen saver, MakeLoveNotSpam, was extremely well received despite the whines and hand wringing from the no-one-should-ever-actively-de crowd. There was speculation after its demise that Open Source spam-punishing tools would emerge. Other tools such as SpamVampire, LadVampire (punishes fake bank sites), Spam Research Tool and others were mentioned with increasing frequency, but there has been no coherent followup to gauge what people are doing since the death of the Lycos screen saver. What are you doing that you think is effective in punishing spammers or their spam-site sponsors?

Nuclear feud (Dec 27 2004 23:56 GMT)

- Sunday's New York Times sheds light on the underground nuclear supply network of AQ Khan -- designer of Pakistan's nuclear bomb who transformed himself into a nuclear entrepeneur, supplying designs and technology to such nations as Libya and Iran. The story identifies the emerging fault lines between the key international organization set up to monitor nuclear proliferation -- the International Atomic Energy Agency -- and the Bush administration. A war without a plan (Dec 27 2004 23:56 GMT)

- Critics of Donald Rumsfeld's Department of Defense have long alleged that military planners didn't prepare for the occupation of Iraq, and now a military planner himself is saying the same thing. In an unpublished report, covered by the Washington Post, Maj. Isasiah Wilson III, a military historian who helped devise the Pentagon's Iraq strategy, writes that the Defense Department never had a plan for "Phase IV" -- the period of occupation and reconstruction that would, in theor...

But the good news is the world is not likely to be destroyed by an asteroid any time soon. Scientist Bill McGuire told a news conference on natural disasters on Monday that sometime in the next few thousand years the western flank of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Canary Island of La Palma will collap...
