Conservative versus Wingnuts (Dec 27 2004 23:46 GMT)

- American Conservative Magazine versus the wingnut blogosphere talk radio.A month before the election, the invariably well-informed Bob Novak forecast that Bush would withdraw from Iraq and "end the neoconservative dream of building democracy in the Arab world." Pat Buchanan in these pages claimed that the Iraq mess had tempered any Bush lust for further imperial adventures. The Tsunami Disaster: World Scrambles To Help (Dec 27 2004 23:46 GMT)

- With over 20,000 dead as a result of the strongest earthquake (and consequent tsunamis) in 40 years, the scramble is now to help: From President Bush to Pope John Paul II, the world's political and spiritual leaders urged support on Sunday for victims of the giant waves in Asia as relief agencies and governments girded to offer technical help and aid. The United States said assistance was already on its way to some of the most stricken areas. The speed and scale of the disaster - with thousands dead - left some relief specialists struggling to keep pace with events. "The needs are enormous," said Louis Michel, a senior official of the European Union, which offered $4 million in emergency funds.

[27 Dec] [22:58 joerg] devel/libbfd - 2.15 (Dec 27 2004 23:44 GMT)

- Upgrade to binutils 2.15. Revert from USE_LIBTOOL to binutil's own libtool, as libtool13 could not grok the --without-pic option, and the configure script is not prepared to handle libtool15 (yet) which in turn could have understood --without-pic. Sigh. At least, that way we can avoid the overhead of building all the unneeded shared libs.
