- WITH A COMPAQ , it often has a " non dos diagnostics partition" if fdisk does not show this partition, the system may be looking for it and cannot find it. you must install it first before anything else. then you fdisk and format the drive as usual. it is only a few megs. You can often get the service pack sp????.
