Decoding evolution (Dec 30 2004 19:59 GMT) - From The Economist, Evidence that evolutionary change is not always a smooth process : ONE of the most acrimonious disputes in biology is between those who believe that evolutionary change is a smooth and gradual process and those who think it happens suddenly—evolution by creeps versus evolution by jerks, as some of the protagonists unkindly put it. The gradualist model tends to be favoured by those who study things that are still alive, while the punctuated-equilibrium model, as the sudden-transition... |

In No Uncertain Terms, by Edward L. Daley (Dec 30 2004 19:59 GMT) - I'm getting damned tired of being made to feel like I have to defend the United States of America against accusations made by people from other countries who consistently prove themselves to be lacking in any respectability or honor whatsoever, and I think it's about time I expressed a few of my more contentious views concerning the "international community" in general. |

No aid for America's bad image (Dec 30 2004 19:58 GMT) - By lying low in the wake of the Asian tsunami, and then surfacing to pledge the relatively small amount of $35 million in relief aid, has President Bush squandered an opportunity to mend America's image abroad? It's a provocative question posed by David Sanger in the New York Times Thursday, in which he quotes Morton Abramowitz, who served as American ambassador to Thailand a quarter century ago and went on to become one of the founders of the International Crisis Group, which helps prepare gov... |

The Idiot Tax, by Jeff Adams (Dec 30 2004 19:57 GMT) - I have to admit that in the beginning, I wasn't too bothered by the growth of gambling casinos and state lotteries. I initially viewed it as something that allowed people to freely entertain themselves, and spend their money as they saw fit. No skin off my nose. Over time, I've come to realize what a mistake this view was. |

Apex Digital Chairman Arrested In China For Fraud (Dec 30 2004 19:57 GMT) - Earlier this year, we had a story noting that Apex Digital, known mainly as a distributor of insanely cheap Chinese-made consumer electronics, was doing amazingly well, and planning to move into the computer business as well. It appears, however, that the "amazingly well" part of the equation was helped along by, you know, not actually paying their vendors. Apex's chairman has now been arrested in China on fraud charges, following the news that many companies believe Apex owes them millions of dollars. And you wondered why those DVD players were so cheap? |
