Really Dynamic Webpages (Dec 30 2004 20:15 GMT)

- Web designers have begun to pick up on a fun technique to update sections of a web page in real time. This update gets done without redrawing and reloading the whole page. See XMLHttpRequest for The Masses for a discussion of what's happening. Pretty cool, but the question I have is whether or not this will work with screenreaders used by blind folks. If it doesn't, then the use of XMLHttpRequest in this way may not meet the Section 508 accessability requirements which would mean it might be a no-no for U.

OSDL chief credits SCO, big business for Linux growth (Dec 30 2004 20:15 GMT)

- It's been a big year for Portland, Ore.-based Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) -- doubling membership and broadening both support and market for Linux and open source development, but OSDL CEO Stuart Cohen credits a surprising factor in this year's Linux leaps: the SCO Group and its legal assault. "I've said a number of times that I think the SCO lawsuit did more to accelerate the use of Linux than anything else," Cohen told NewsForge in a recent interview. "Because it forced every CIO, every CTO, and every general counsel and outside counsel to do due diligence on Linux and open source, and it came through with flying colors.

GREED (Dec 30 2004 20:14 GMT)

- Paradoxes and omissions in Adam Smith's original theory permit - encourage - greed without restraint so that in a very large society over two centuries it has become an undemocratic force creating precipitous inequalities; divisions in this society now approach a kind of wealth apartheid, and our values are quite unlike Smith's: this is an immensely wealthy society but it is not a humane society. Wealth and poverty are connected, in fact recent sociological theory shows our institutions routinely design inequality in, but this connection is largely avoided in texts and in the media, as is the notion that greed is a moral wrong. Problems created by greed cannot be solved by technology.

PTSD treatment emphasizes the importance of remaining around people whove been in combat and can relate to a patients suffering.     This reservist is STILL prattling on about WMD's,,,,that so 2004.

New blogger lets loose (Dec 30 2004 20:13 GMT)

- Blogospheric newcomer Libertarian Girl, in a post regarding tsunami relief, proves herself to be an articulate spokesperson for hard-lining libertarians. American taxpayers shouldn't be forced to pay for Tsunami relief. It's not our responsibility to help those who refuse to help themselves. The reason why the countries hurt by the tsunami are too poor to afford their own tsunami relief is because their governments are corrupt and they don't allow free markets to flourish and create wealth. Sri Lanka especially is considered one of the most corrupt governments in the world.
