Nigeria: PDP: Why Obasanjo Wants Ogbeh Out (Dec 31 2004 00:26 GMT) - There is a growing anxiety within the topmost hierarchy of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the likely outcome of the raging titanic battle between the forces of the presidency (as typified by President Olusegun Obasanjo) and the national chairman of the party, Chief Audu Ogbeh, who is the arrowhead of the proxy war by some state governors allegedly being sponsored by Vice President Atiku Abubakar for control of the soul of the party. The ultimate goal of the war is to clinch the 2007 presidency on the party platform. The political scenario that is gradually and steadily emerging indicates that the 2007 presidential contest is between President Obasanjo and Vice President Atiku. The seeming conflict between the duo stemmed from the alleged preference of Obasanjo for another aspirant instead of Atiku, who has positioned himself politically, strategically, to take over from his boss as the natural heir. |

Nigeria: Lagos Goes Agog for Aka Ikenga (Dec 31 2004 00:26 GMT) - IT was reminiscent of the Biblical injunction: many were called but few were chosen. You looked around the room and there was this small crowd, a smiling happy people, selected by a special committee raised by Aka Ikenga for this once a year celebration. You could deduce the event was a double celebration. Firstly, the organisation had, in collaboration with the pan Igbo organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, successfully hosted a think-tank of the Igbo at their Asaba, Delta State, Retreat a few weeks earlier. |

Nigeria: How Anambra Governorship Poll Was Rigged (Dec 31 2004 00:26 GMT) - Nigerians were again stunned last Tuesday when the Anambra political godfather, Chief Chris Uba, opened up on circumstances surrounding the "election" of Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige as Governor of Anambra State. Before now, majority of Anambra people both at home and in diaspora, believed that the April 19, 2003 Governorship election that produced Dr. Ngige was massively rigged, but both the Governor and the sole sponsor of the election, Chief Uba, continued to claim that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) obtained a legal mandate from Anambrarians to rule the state for four years, no matter what happened during the "fraudulent" poll. The political godfather and members of his group had barely settled down to celebrate their "victory" when crisis began to rock the camp, which united behind the governor in the election. |

Weblications (Dec 31 2004 00:25 GMT) - Adam Rifkin writes about the evolution in the software industry "from desktop applications running on single-machines that helped individuals with productivity through word processing and spreadsheets and email, to enterprise applications in corporate data centers that helped workgroups and companies with productivity through automating business processes... and now to collaborative applications available to anyone from anywhere on the Internet, leveraging an increasingly-connected and ever-faster world. The web is the platform that subsumes the others...The software platform of choice evolved from desktop operating systems, to enterprise operating systems, to what Tim O'Reilly calls the emergent Internet operating system." |

Forget Torture; It's the Sex That Matters (Dec 31 2004 00:24 GMT) - These are the "moralists" who are compelling General Fiscus to retire at a lower rank because he misbehaved with a dozen women. Numerous reports, including reports from the FBI, have made it clear that torture of prisoners is more widespread than the White House has admitted. Numerous reports have made it clear that US troops, whether from confusion, fear, or sport have slaughtered Iraqi civilians. Marines destroyed the city of Fallujah, and the commander on the scene claimed no Iraqi civilians were killed. But General Fiscus has behaved unbecomingly. |
