Sugar and Grains Increase Depression (Dec 31 2004 03:49 GMT) - I have long stated that exercise is one of the most potent treatments for depression. A new study provides additional support for this notion by determining that insulin resistance appears to have a strong relationship to depression. Appropriate cardiovascular exercise is one of the most effective ways to normalize insulin resistance. It is very clear that exercise, insulin and sugar are strongly related to depression. However, it is also equally clear that one could have no insulin resistance, a perfect diet and exercise program and struggle with a serious depression. |

Baby Boomers, Elderly Exercise Metabolic Syndrome Away (Dec 31 2004 03:49 GMT) - I recently posted an article detailing some of the risks of metabolic syndrome, a deadly mix of several conditions -- weight gain, obesity, lack of physical activity and various genetic factors. As always, preventing weight gains and obesity is far easier than applying treatment options, though the success of prevention depends directly on the patient. In a recent study of baby boomers and seniors (ages 55-75), even moderate exercise cuts the risk of developing a syndrome which increases heart disease and diabetes risk. The group of more than 100 people, none of whom had shown any signs of cardiovascular disease (apart from slightly raised blood pressure), were monitored for six months. Half the participants took part in exercise sessions for an hour three times a week, including aerobic exercise and weightlifting, while the rest were given a booklet that encouraged increased activity, such as walking, to promote good health. |

Botox + Surgery To Relieve Migraines? (Dec 31 2004 03:49 GMT) - Last year, I posted a news story about researchers studying the use of botox -- normally used to "cure" wrinkles -- as a method to treat migraines. I truly sympathize with people who suffer from the horrible pain associated with migraines. Sadly, desparate measures often provoke extreme risks, like injecting Botox and even incredibly insane things like having their facial muscles severed.I thought it was sheer lunacy then. Can you imagine anything topping that? |

Iron Deficiency Linked To Restless Legs Syndrome (Dec 31 2004 03:49 GMT) - If you wonder why I recommend regularly monitoring your iron levels -- too much or too little iron can create problems -- to optimize your health, the results of a Mayo Clinic study of the incidence of restless legs syndrome speak volumes. In a survey of 532 children who were seen at Mayo's sleep clinic, 6 percent of them suffered from restless legs syndrome. The common risk factors:A family history of the disorder (more than three times likely in mothers)Iron deficiencyOf that group who suffers from restless legs syndrome, a surprising 83 percent had low iron levels in the blood (as measured by serum ferritin), according to researchers who were unsure if a poor diet or genetic predisposition is to blame.Scientists believe it's important to recognize and treat the condition, not only from a dietary perspective, but because it can impair a child's quality of life. |

Antioxidants: Are Peanuts Better Than Fruit? (Dec 31 2004 03:49 GMT) - New research has led scientists to believe, in some cases, peanuts can more than hold their own with fruits in terms of antioxidant content. Peanuts contain high concentrations of p-coumaric acid, a polyphenol compound whose overall antioxidant content can be increased by more than 20 percent simply by roasting them, according to researchers. In fact, one scientist pointed out roasted peanuts are about as rich in antioxidants as blackberries or strawberries, and are far richer in the chemicals than fruits such as apples, carrots or beets.Comparing them, in general, to other foods people think of as rich in antioxidants (mostly fruits and berries) scientists believe peanuts come out somewhere in the middle. Although peanuts are no match for the foods at the top of the scale, such as pomegranates, they do rival other foods people eat just for their antioxidant content, according to the study. |

How Fish Oil Protects Your Heart (Dec 31 2004 03:49 GMT) - I know this article from the British Medical Journal is nearly a year old but still felt this piece, an overview which outlines the ways fish oil protects your body against coronary disease, remains extremely relevant and includes some great charts and illustrations. (Besides, the original source material is available as a free PDF!)The perspective of this article mirrors my own opinions about the use of fish oil as an natural alternative -- along with a healthy diet -- to protect your heart, instead of conventional medicine's all too common "band aid" approach that focuses on toxic drugs that treat specific symptoms and never the root cause of the problem. How fish oil, chock full of good for you omega-3 fatty acids, works as a mechanism to protect your heart:AntiarrhythmicAntithromb endothelial functionLowers blood pressureLowers triglyceride concentrationsThe important thing to remember about taking fish oil this excellent piece doesn't cover: |

Should Drugs Be Advertised on Television? (Dec 31 2004 03:49 GMT) - The last time I had TV in my home was when the Bulls finished their string of six world championships with Michael Jordan nearly ten years ago. I watched nearly everyone of Michael's games as he was one of the most awesome atheletes ever. At that time it was illegal for any drug company to have direct to consumer ads on television. But that has long changed. I really haven't had the chance to view any of these ads, but I know they are being broadcast. |

Texas Consortium proposes Super Highway (Dec 31 2004 03:49 GMT) - The Trans-Texas Corridor project, as envisioned by Republican Gov. Rick Perry in 2002, would be a 4,000-mile transportation network costing an awesome $175 billion over 50 years, financed mostly if not entirely with private money. The builders would then charge motorists tolls. |

ecommerce site abandonment (Dec 31 2004 03:44 GMT) - Actually no, but it was determined by two who saw it (husband and neighbor who is a fireman) that it had needed stitches. We were in the midst of a wind storm and objects were flying around the property, including the large trampoline that jumped our backyard fence and broke part of the fence. I was focused on keeping my kids and my neighbors kids calm. My daughter helped me tend to the hand. She was quite brave about that (she's 14. |
