Lost Property [Phil Woodford] (Dec 31 2004 13:50 GMT) - I stupidly left something on a train this morning. When I phoned Waterloo lost property just before 10 am, I was told that someone had been sent to collect all the latest items and I should call back at lunchtime. Having just called, I've been told that the stuff collected this morning was last night's lost property. This morning's won't be collected until 4 o'clock, so I should phone back at 5. How stupid of me for not realising. |

New Trojan Threatens Windows XP SP 2 (Dec 31 2004 13:50 GMT) - lightdarkness writes "Symantec is reporting about a new virus called Phel (Anagram of 'help') which is a Trojan which spreads via a HTML file. All the user needs to do is go to the page, and it takes advantage of the vulnerability in the IE Help control component files. This allows the attacker to download malicious programs on to the machine. Worst part is, this is one of the exploits that even effects SP2. Microsoft is said to be working to stop the spread, and to release a patch. |

New Year, Perspectives and Risk Management [Carol Long] (Dec 31 2004 13:48 GMT) - 2004 was fantastic for some and very mixed for others. It is ending in total devastation for thousands abroad and incredible uncertainty for hundreds at home. For part of 2004, I was working with colleagues to make small improvements in risk management for our projects. This week puts into perspective some of the risks about which we got really worried. I had no idea that the world would be reminded in this last week of this year that sometimes the unthinkable happens. |

Another Recount For Ohio (Dec 31 2004 13:46 GMT) - Sigh... COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Two third-party presidential candidates asked a federal court Thursday to force a second recount of the Ohio vote, alleging county election boards altered votes and didn't follow proper procedures in the recount that ended this week. Lawyers for Green Party candidate David Cobb and the Libertarian Party's Michael Badnarik made their request in federal court in Columbus. The two candidates, who received less than 0.3 percent of the Ohio vote, paid $113,600 for a statewide recount after the vote was certified earlier this month by the secretary of state. |

Governments cannot be charitable (Dec 31 2004 13:45 GMT) - When people criticise 'America' for not giving more money to help with the horrendous calamity that has overwhelmed a large part of southern coastal Asia, they really need to keep in mind that, as mentioned on James Bartholomew's site, private aid does not get counted and that far outwieghs US government aid. Moreover, money received from a nation-state cannot be charity as the money is not freely given, whereas willingly donated private funds are true... |
