Tow shop owner claims racism by city officials in dispute (Dec 31 2004 15:30 GMT) - Supporters of a tow shop owner who has battled city officials for nearly eight years for a business license rallied Thursday, claiming racism is at the root of his problems.Some 25 minutes into the noon demonstration, 13 adults and one child had congregated in front of Alton City Hall carrying signs in support of Bob Lamon, owner of Lamon Towing, 1310 Central Ave."Justice for Black Businessmen," "Economic Discrimination," "Stop the Monopolization of the Towing Service" and "Corruption in the City of Alton" were among the messages on the marchersÂ’ hand-lettered signs.The demonstration attracted attention from passing motorists at Third and Alby streets, but hardly any city officials or employees were in City Hall because it had closed at noon for the New YearÂ’s holiday weekend. Lamon, 54, who is black, previously operated his business on Missouri Avenue south of Broadway. |
