Another Happy New Year [Marion Jones] (Dec 31 2004 18:24 GMT) - Just wanted to wish everyone I have 'met' in 2004 at Ecademy a very Happy New Year. May 2005 be prosperous and fulfilling and a better year for those who have not fared so well in 2004. Hoping to meet more of you in the flesh, so to speak, over the next 12 months. Thanks to all those who have helped me since I joined and for the support and friendship I have had. You are a wonderful crowd. |

ME-Sen: the word on Snowe (Dec 31 2004 18:24 GMT) - In Maine, MB updates us on the latest Olympia Snowe rumblings:Maine's largest single employers are BIW (Bath Iron Works) and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The former generally builds ships, the latter repairs them. With the loss over the last 20 years of Maine's manufacturing base (shoes, clothing, paper), these remaining skilled labor jobs have been closely guarded. Hence, the reason the increasingly blueing Maine electorate has consistently sent two Republican women back to the US Senate. |

Ford backs off privatization (Dec 31 2004 18:24 GMT) - Harold Ford has backed off his destructive social security stance. I do not support changing the Social Security system as has been proposed by President Bush, nor do I support Social Security proposals advanced by the CATO Institute. In fact, both of these proposals have the potential to harm current beneficiaries by paying for the transition costs by issuing debt. Piling on more red ink to the existing federal budget deficit and the national debt will do both long and short term harm to our economy. I do believe that the system needs to be reformed but I do not support changing the Social Security system as President Bush has proposed. |

Feingold the maverick whip (Dec 31 2004 18:24 GMT) - Feingold will serve as of the party's four deputy whip. One of the Democratic Party's biggest mavericks in charge of enforcing party loyalty? As such, the senator who broke ranks during the Clinton impeachment fight, the Ashcroft confirmation fight, the Patriot Act debate and too many other issues to count will now be charged with enforcing party loyalty. But don't expect Feingold to change his tune, or his approach. Already, Feingold is suggesting that the decision of Senate Democrats to make him a whip was a tacit acknowledgment that they need to listen to more independent voices. |

RANKINGS (Dec 31 2004 18:23 GMT) - I think you should be aware that the SE algo is made mostly for the top maybe 100 results. When you are talking about 300 it is hard to say what kind of things really affect ranking down there. I have never evaluated the top 300 results, and I bet there are very few who have. It is a rare instance that you will get PR 0'd and sometimes even that is only temporary. If you haven't done anything really against the "rules" you are probably not PR 0'd. |
