Microsoft: Loses Passport (Dec 31 2004 19:25 GMT) - nikkoslack copies and pastes: "Microsoft is abandoning one of its most controversial attempts to dominate the Internet after rival companies banded together to oppose it and consumers failed to embrace it. The Redmond software company said Wednesday it would stop trying to persuade Web sites to use its Passport service, which stores consumers' credit-card and other information as Internet users surf from place to place." |

Spammers be gone! (Dec 31 2004 19:25 GMT) - I've had to make a few changes to the code behind this site because of a few comment spammers going wild with their rubbish links here. I'm lucky enough to escape from most comment spam as I run a home made system and the spammers tend to point automated scripts at popular applications like Movable Type or Wordpress. However, some of them still run through here from time to time, manually dumping their lists of URLs into various posts' comments. So, until I get time to build in better protection (mod_security is my friend), all HTML links inside comments will be stripped. Which means that if you legitimately want to point to an external site in your comment, people will have to copy-paste the naked URL in order to go there. |

New Year Free Party (Dec 31 2004 19:25 GMT) - I tend to keep my vinyl-spinning antics separate from what gets posted here but I got several tellings-off the last time an event of this type took place and I didn't warn anybody. So, for all those people (and anyone else that needs their bass fix): I'll be spinning at the Boups New Year's Eve free party this Friday. To find out the location, call one of the numbers on the flyer after 22:00. |

Charly To Be Released in 16x9 Widescreen! (Dec 31 2004 19:24 GMT) - I am now convinced that Charly was delayed so that MGM could prepare a widescreen transfer. DVD Planet and Best Buy both confirm that Charly will be released in Anamorphic Widescreen on March 8th, 2005. Count this as another victory for OAR fans. I would like to thank Christopher Bligh ... |

Exodus: Movement of Jah People (Dec 31 2004 19:24 GMT) - "The essence of Jewish ethics is the development of sensitivity for one's fellow human beings, and the ability to see every person as a vehicle for the image of G-d in which he or she was created. In fact, this is the 'reason' the Jewish people ended up in Egypt ... |

'Blog' is word of the year [Jim Wade] (Dec 31 2004 19:24 GMT) - End of year snippet - a list (see below) of the year's most looked-up words on Merriam-Webster's website. I can see why many of these might have particularly intrigued lots of Americans - concepts associated with elections, weather, sport, the Iraq adventure and so on. But why do you think cicada and defenestration are there? 1. blog 2. |

One reason for running Linux ... (Dec 31 2004 19:24 GMT) - One reason for running Linux on an iPod...I wondered the other day why anyone would want to do this. One reason, kindly suggested by Paul Downey, is to be able to circumvent Apple's crippling of the iPod's recording facility (which will only let one record at a measly 8kHz) and push it up to 96kHz. Just what one would need for recording, say, live music at reasonable audio quality! |

Any WINDOWS ME Experts out there [Ian Waterman] (Dec 31 2004 19:24 GMT) - I am running out of Disk space, the culprit seems to be a Folder directly attached to the C drive with the name _RESTORE. It has a size of 4.25 GB, but when I look inside it only has 4 subfolders, one of which is TEMP which is taking up 2.21GB and ARCHIVE which is taking up 1.2GB I have gone to Restore in the operating system and there are only a few restore points back in May and April of this year. |

Friday Cat Blogging (Dec 31 2004 19:24 GMT) - This is my last post in the Friday Cat Blogging category. The category page is getting much too long, and since it is graphics- intensive, it takes forever to load. But never fear -- this post also inaugurates the Friday Cat Blogging 2 category. From now on, I will try to do this every six months or so. |

Montana Flirts with (Un)Intelligent Design (Dec 31 2004 19:23 GMT) - The Montana state legislature has two bills that look at the issue of evolution. Sen. Ken Toole, D-Helena, is sponsoring a resolution reaffirming the state's commitment to separation of church and state and to teaching valid scientific principles, which in his mind rules out creationism. On the other side, Rep. Roger Koopman, ... |
