Caltech and JPL Build 50ft Robot (Dec 31 2004 21:25 GMT) - OctaneZ writes "NASA announced that they will enter, in cooperation with Caltech, a 50ft robot in the Rose Bowl Parade - unfortunately it will be made entirely of flowers and will not attempt to enslave the crowd. However, they have mounted a camera to it, which will allow you to view the parade from the top of their creation."... |

Is click fraud really an issue? (Dec 31 2004 21:24 GMT) - Well, if you believe the likes of Jessie Stricchiola (why by the way has a vested interest in scaring advertisers because Alchemist Media sells click-fraud detection services), it would appear that the advertising world is about to come to an end. At iProceed, we conducted research into the extent of click fraud, and here are our findings: The advertisers would rather not have click fraud in a perfect world but they understand that advertising effectiveness is extremely low in all cases. In fact, in our analysis, we learned that advertisers found text links to have the highest ROI even if one considers the high-end estimate of click fraud (~20%). (Related link: |

Thinking Outside the Box (Dec 31 2004 21:24 GMT) - Although I have been touting the new autoboxing and unboxing feature in Java 2 version 5, I didn't realize how far the language is willing to go with these automatic conversions. The following code doesn't work in version 4: public void setDeposit(Float deposit) { if (deposit > |

Desktop search engine shootout (Dec 31 2004 21:23 GMT) - I tested five desktop search tools for Slate. If your favorite (X1, Blinkx, Lookout, etc) wasn't in there, it's because we focused on those that are (a) free and (b) being mass-marketed by the big Web portals - AOL, Google, HotBot, Ask Jeeves, and MSN. Yahoo's X1-powered app isn't available yet. |

RIP: Eric "Joefire" Bass (Dec 31 2004 21:23 GMT) - Also from the SF Weekly, a profile of the popular character behind local political blog joefire.com, who passed away over Thanksgiving. "The Web site morphed into something larger than life," Cohen adds. "It's been argued that not many people read his site. But the people who read his site were the people who were running local politics. |

Tops of 2004: Music (Dec 31 2004 21:22 GMT) - Last year I ended up with 30 albums I felt were worth sharing. This year, I only have half of that. Although there were a few things I really enjoyed, I was not as excited by this year's releases. That being said, all of these records below made me extremely happy for a period of time. Instead of giving you a miniature review of each record, I'll just give you links to read about and then buy the album. |

UCLA Steam Tunnels (Dec 31 2004 21:20 GMT) - Since I'm going to give a tour of UCLA today, I figure I may as well post a secret treasure map of the university's soft underbelly: the steam tunnels. The sweet adverturous nectar your departmental overlords don't want you to see! Legend has it that the tunnels have been sealed since my conspirators and I last explored them, but I'm sure an enterprising urban adventurer could find her way in. There's all sorts of treasure to be claimed and mysterious chambers to explore, like the Toilet Graveyard, the steam plant, and the Royce Towers (as seen on the seal of... |
