Kurzweil Immortal (Dec 31 2004 22:40 GMT) - Speaking of longevity, and in stark contrast to Wednesday's post on pessimism, this article in the New York Times looks at Ray Kurzweil, the eccentric and brilliant computer scientist who expects break-through technology to bring a massive and essentially unimaginable change to human existence sometime within the next 50 or so years. Those who follow futurist and AI discussions are very familiar with Mr Kurzweil. The article looks at his new book, which claims that cellular-level treatments should be able to stop most diseases and halt aging in about 15-20 years, with great advances coming soon afterward. To make it to that point, the 56-year-old Kurzweil has embarked on a rigorous dietary regime to keep him alive long enough for the technology to render him basically immortal. Kurzweil is a genius, and his success as an inventor is undeniable, but I remain a skeptic. |

Capital One Sued Over Alleged "No Hassle" Hassles (Dec 31 2004 22:38 GMT) - Minnesota Attorney General Mike Hatch filed a lawsuit yesterday against Capital One, alleging that the company engaged in false and deceptive advertising of its "No Hassle" fixed rate credit card. We believe this lawsuit is ridiculous, and that it demonstrates the need for greater consumer credit education and awareness. |
