http://archive. scripting. com/2004/12/31#When:1: (Dec 31 2004 22:34 GMT) - Surely the last podcast of the year, in which I assert to A Curry (and anyone else who cares) that I am an addict of The Daily Source Code, and only want the program notes to show up in my aggregator after I've listened to the podcast. Maybe as much as 24 hours after. That and some philosophy, as usual, about random things that occur to me while driving on US Highway 45 in Mississippi and Alabama, USA. |

Two-Billion-Year-Old Communities (Dec 31 2004 22:33 GMT) - A fascinating blurb about saline pools in Australia that contain stone structures that date as far back as two billion years and still house the community of primitive bacteria that built (and continue building) them. These stromatolites are called "living fossils" and are the planet's oldest extant life forms. Here are pictures of the things. |

PHP Smackdown (Dec 31 2004 22:33 GMT) - The PHP homepage has a phpBB smackdown, but unfortunately no permalinks. Apparently the phpBB asserted that the problem was due to a bug in PHP (which I had heard as well) when in fact it was a input validation error in phpBB. More snark! |

Was Bush's Second Term Stolen? (Dec 31 2004 22:32 GMT) - Thanks to Preemptive Karma for this link. It seems that there is plenty of evidence around that both the Ohio and the New Mexico presidential vote was tampered with to the extent that is could have changed the result. The most interesting fact is the Kerry's promise to make sure every vote was counted was empty. His campaign initiated only one lawsuit in one county in Ohio. The lawyer hired by the Kerry campaign said there was no evidence of fraud. |

America, Europe, and Drinking-and-Driving (Dec 31 2004 22:30 GMT) - An interesting article on two very different approaches to the precarious combination of alcohol and automobiles. PARIS -- The accident bore the familiar details of a drunk-driving tragedy. Six young people, age 16 to 20, had been out late at a club. On the long ride toward home early on a Saturday morning, their small car smashed into a bridge pillar, killing everyone. Witnesses said the driver, 20, appeared drunk as he left the club. |
