The big easy (Jan 07 2005 23:31 GMT) - (UK) Antigua is not Jamaica - loud, frenetic and in your face, where a sunset swim is an invitation for a drug dealer in a kayak to chase a girl, yelling, Hey baby, you English, you like Jamaica, you like cocaine? (Yes, yes and thrice yes - but not right now, mate.) CES Showfloor: Brother Innov-is 4000D (Jan 07 2005 23:31 GMT) - I didn't expect to find the words, "that's a badass sewing machine" coming out of my mouth, and from the look on his face, neither did the guy from Brother Sewing. He should be used to it, though, because it's totally true. The Innov-is 4000D converts any image file into an embroidered pattern—even directly from USB flash drives. ... |

CES Showfloor: Garmin StreetPilot c330 (Jan 07 2005 23:31 GMT) - Here's the new StreetPilot c330, Garmin's answer to the recently-released TomTomGo. It looks extremely similar in both size and form factor, but I didn't get a chance to really mess around with it. The "3D" map is still just a 2D map viewed in perspective (like TomTomGo), but it looks like a nice enough bit of mapping kit. This sort of thing attached to your windshield next to your rearview mirror will make you feel like a space pilot, I promise. ... |

A phone you can finally type on: My latest Slate column (Jan 07 2005 23:30 GMT) - Slate just published my latest technology column -- this one in praise of the unique keyboard system on the new Blackberry 7100t. It opens: If you've tried to zap someone a text message recently, you've probably discovered the huge drawback of typing on your cell phone. Unless you're one of those cyborg Scandinavian teenagers who was born with a Nokia in his hand, pecking out even a simple message is a thumb-twisting chore. You can speed things up by using SMS shorthand—"C U l8r"—but that ain't gonna cut it if you need to write a serious business e-mail. |

Citizen reporters who survived the tsunami (Jan 07 2005 23:30 GMT) - According to Steve Outing on Poynter Online the world turns to citizen journalists for eyewitness accounts and more as the crisis continues to unfold. Digital technologies -- the Web, e-mail, blogs, digital cameras, camera phones -- have evolved to the point where people on the scene share with professional journalists the ability to reach a wide audience, to tell and show the world what they saw and experienced. Where once disaster eyewitness photographs and videos turned up for widespread viewing only on news programs and in newspapers, today through e-mail, blogs, and a blogging infrastructure that spreads amateur news quickly and efficiently, they often find large audiences without the help or need of mainstream news outlets. What's so striking about this story is the breadth of citizen coverage. Digital still and/or video cameras and photo phones were ubiquitous among many of the tourists who were visiting the Asian beaches devastated by the tsunami -- and to a lesser extent by local resident populations. |

Distributed Digital IDs (Jan 07 2005 23:30 GMT) - Like others interested in digital IDs, I've been looking at LID and hope to install it this weekend, maybe tonight. I'm interested in any system that's decentralized, as LID appears to be. However, I want to take a closer look before I make any assumptions of the mechanics of the approach. More later, after I have a chance to play around with my flood photos. |
