A Different United Daughters of the Confederacy Member (Jan 09 2005 23:59 GMT) - Cortez writes "In Southern public libraries the UDC is a very vocal and important means of support for genealogy and local history programs. "But in Odom's case, she is held in highest esteem because she is a living, or ''real,'' daughter of the Confederacy, one of only a handful still alive in Tennessee. Her father, Peter Vertrees, served with the 6th Kentucky Infantry from 1861 to 1865, where he witnessed the ravages of war at Shiloh and Vicksburg, among other engagements. But there's something else that separates the new nonagenarian from those sending birthday wishes. Lillie Harding Vertrees Odom is black. |

Jessamyn says libraries are doing badly because people are having to make tough choices about where their money is going and they're chosing policemen over librarians. She also takes a jab at the silly "librarian shortage" fallacy. "Please also note the nod to the upcoming "librarian shortage" coming at a time when hundreds of library students can't find work and tell me how much ALA should be promoting higher library school enrollment? |

MI Library Looks at Reducing Hours, Temporary Closure (Jan 09 2005 23:59 GMT) - The St. Clair County Library System (MI) is faced with financial problems and is looking at severely cutting hours or shutting down for four weeks in order to stay open. The cuts would mean fewer hours for students to research papers, fewer programs for small children and their parents, less computer time for those without Internet access of their own and fewer hours to browse the stacks for books. Any cuts in hours would reduce the hours that library staffers have to work and possibly could lead to layoffs. |
