New Apple IT pro section (Jan 12 2005 23:59 GMT) - I’m glad to see Apple moving to compete better in the corporate space. I am a Mac-head, but not annoyingly so, I think; I’m nearly as happy with Debian/Gentoo/NetBSD/FreeBSD on PC hardware. |

Ranting for integrity (DAV and internal congruence) (Jan 12 2005 23:59 GMT) - From time to time I give money to the Disabled American Veterans organization (DAV), in part motivated by my perception that vets, especially disabled ones, are among the most honorable — as in well-intentioned and self-sacrificing — but disrespected people in our society. Like, I just don’t see how “ |

Local Textpattern development in MAMP? (Jan 12 2005 23:59 GMT) - MAMP provides Mac OS X (Panther) an utterly self-contained and easy-to-manage install of Apache2, PHP4, PHP5, and MySQL (also phpMyAdmin and MMCache) for up-to-date Web developing. Textpattern (Txp) served locally this way seems faster than from my more involved local PowerBook Apache2/PHP/MySQL install. And MAMP is 100 times simpler to configure than a system-wide install of these apps; there’s almost nothing to it. |

An Interesting Threat to Ohio Libraries (Jan 12 2005 23:59 GMT) - AshtabulaGuy writes "In a story by staff writer Mark Todd, the Star Beacon reports that the Board of County Commissioners of Ashtabula County is presently thinking about adjusting the distribution of LLGSF (Libraries amp; Local Government State Fund) dollars so that the county retains a larger chunk of the money. Local governments as well as local libraries will be affected through the loss of funds. Diana Lewis of The News-Herald also reports on the matter by providing more dollar amount figures for local political subdivisions but leaves libraries out of her discussion. Ohio has 88 counties which means that when one has a shortfall in funds followed by a "neat idea" for fixing the problem, other counties can follow suit as well if the law permits (or agitate state leadership in Columbus to make the law permit such). |

Powell's Schoolbook Challenge (Jan 12 2005 23:59 GMT) - My favorite online bookstore, Powell's, has launched the Powell's Schoolbook Challenge, with the goal of placing 50,000 new books on the shelves of Portland and Beaverton (Ore.) school libraries. Now through February 28, Powell's will purchase ten additional new books for every $5.95 one-book pledge they receive, donating all to their local school libraries. I hope the Portland and Beaverton media specialists have their collection development lists in order! |

Commerce Buzzing Like Flies Around Your Beady Little Head (Jan 12 2005 23:58 GMT) - I?ve been reading some of the opinions about the new Apple stuff and I?m not entirely sure I even have an opinion worth writing down. But, given the fact that this is a weblog the point of confluence for the world?s poorly focused mental making whoopie with the self, I? |

Who is Charlotte Simmons? (Jan 12 2005 23:57 GMT) - In short, Wolfe portrays Dupont, and in turn, elite education, as a shallow institution, a shell of its former greatness, listlessly adrift amidst the baggage discarded to reach its present form—God, chivalry, morality, individuality, truth, choice, and intellectual advancement—without clear cause and without obvious escape. |
