F.B.I. May Scrap Vital Overhaul of Its Outdated Computer System (Jan 14 2005 23:58 GMT) - The Federal Bureau of Investigation is on the verge of scrapping a $170 million computer overhaul that is considered critical to the campaign against terrorism but has been riddled with technical and planning problems, F.B.I. officials said on Thursday. In a last-ditch effort to save the program, the bureau has hired a research firm at a cost of $2 million to evaluate the mounting problems in creating a "paperless" work system and to determine whether any parts of the project can be salvaged, officials said. |

35% of US wireless users will switch their carriers (Jan 14 2005 23:58 GMT) - Only 45% of respondents said they were completely satisfied or very satisfied with their cell-phone service, according to Consumer Reports national wireless carrier survey. Nearly 70% of those who use a cell phone frequently had at least one dropped call in the week before the survey. Nearly 60% said they had a bad connection. Only 31% said the company's response to a service inquiry was very helpful; 40% said responses to billing inquiries were very helpful. |

Asia-Pacific monitor market up 13.7% (Jan 14 2005 23:58 GMT) - IDC reports that the total Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) monitor market totaled 25.1 mln units in Q1-Q3 2004, representing a gain of 13.7% YTY. Looking ahead, total Asia/Pacific ex-Japan LCD monitor sales will steam ahead by a double-digit CAGR through 2008, while CRT monitor sales will remain relatively stagnant. In Q3 2004, growth of monitor sales on the OEM monitor market QTQ was more than three times that of standalone sales (the branded monitor market). |
