iPods do MP3 -- my bad (Jan 14 2005 00:59 GMT) - [InfoWorld TechWatch] - InfoWorld Test Center Technical Director Tom Yager passed this blog entry on to me for posting. It comes in response to reader feedback from the analysis piece he generated at the MacWorld show. Yager wrote: I have to thank several readers for pointing out that all Apple iPods, including the new Shuffle, play MP3 files. The proprietary format to which I referred is used for music downloaded from iTunes. |

Apple's Mac Mini stirs major response (Jan 14 2005 00:59 GMT) - [InfoWorld TechWatch] - In response to my blog on Mac Mini that says Apple and Steve Jobs have priced the Mac Mini too high for what you get the emails have been pouring in. I want to remind readers that I wasn't the only one to say this:. See Rob Pegoraro at the Washington Post. He's not that thrilled either. Nor is Seth Jayson at the Motley Fool, or Jack Kapica at the GlobeandMail. |

A Social Security primer (Jan 14 2005 00:56 GMT) - Kevin Drum has a Socratic dialogue about the whole Social Security issue. If you read nothing else to get the basics, read it. It answers most of the general questions the layman (meaning someone other than economists) should have before getting deeply into the details. |

It Certainly Feels Like 1929 (Jan 14 2005 00:56 GMT) - Todd Stein & Steven McIntyre The Texas Hedge Report January 14, 2005 Courtesy of www.texashedge.com When you think of a bubble in the 1920s, what comes to your mind? We are willing to bet that it isnt the Florida real estate craze of 1925. America at Risk (Jan 14 2005 00:56 GMT) - I think we may be missing something here. With the ongoing Establishment-managed debate whether Red China should or will re-value its currency upward to alleviate for some of the losses in the US dollar, there's another outcome that only gets a passing reference. We've read recently that the Chinese government, the PLA (People's Liberation Army), is acquiring Noranda, a Canadian-based resources company. While our financial media presents this... |

From Summer to Winter in Hours (Jan 14 2005 00:55 GMT) - It's hard to believe looking at this photo that a scant 12 hours before, the temperature was in the 70's and I was out walking in my t-shirt, driving with the windows down. We went from windy, warm, and wet to a very wet and strong thunderstorm last night, which turned into a snow storm at mid-day. The Meramec, which had been falling is now rising again. And this is our dry season. Luckily, the odd weather pattern we've been experiencing is supposedly over, and we should be looking at a relatively normal winter from this point on. |

Prince Harry follows in his great great uncle's footsteps - who cares? (Jan 14 2005 00:55 GMT) - The furore over the images of Prince Harry in a Nazi costume illustrates more than a simple lack of judgement for someone in a supposedly public role. There are many who will be rightly offended by this and on the other hand many who equally rightly wont. The issue for me isnt the rights or wrongs of particular modes of fancy dress but the way in which the press engage in a grotesque critique of the lives of one particular family in some seemingly endless orgy of voyeurism and Freudian analyses. |

Re: Tolkien, CAS, California (Jan 14 2005 00:54 GMT) - It would be interesting to know the author of this strange quotation. I had the very considerable good fortune to have taken a master class in philological studies with Dr. Toldien in 1963 (I missed Lewis by just a little because he died that year). Dr. Tolkien's work is only shallow to the shallow. |

Soccer team tries to shed Jewish image (Jan 14 2005 00:54 GMT) - So you're at a soccer (or football) stadium watching a game. Suddenly the fans of one team unfurl a giant flag of Israel and you note that many of them are sporting Stars of David. Where might this be at? Jerusalem? Haifa? |
