Opportunity Spots Curious Object On Mars (Jan 14 2005 03:57 GMT) - NASA’s Opportunity Mars rover has come across an interesting object -- perhaps a meteorite sitting out in the open at Meridiani Planum. Initial data taken by the robot’s Mini-Thermal Emission Spectrometer (Mini-TES) is suggestive that the odd-looking “rock” is made of metal. IBM Proposes a Patent Commons for Royalty-Free Open Source Software Development (Jan 14 2005 03:57 GMT) - IBM, 2004 twelfth consecutive-year leader in patent awards, announced an industry-wide "patent commons" innovation initiative in which royalty-free patented technology is made available for Open Source Software development. IBM seeded the commons by publishing a "Statement of Non-Assertion of Named Patents Against OSS" identifying some 500 IBM patents relating to operating systems and databases, internet, user interface, and language processing technologies. |
