Where oh where have my AIM buddies gone? (Jan 14 2005 23:29 GMT) - [Meerkat: An Open Wire Service] - I was frustrated to find that while the BlackBerry 7100t's IM app meant I walk and chat at the same time (still don't have the gum thing down, though), I could only do so if my buddies pinged me first. You see, my buddy list was completely blank. Almost. ... |

Terminal town (Jan 14 2005 23:29 GMT) - [Meerkat: An Open Wire Service] - I shot the picture above at 10:31am this morning from my window seat on approach to Santa Barbara. The town is La Conchita, which reposes uneasily beneath soft dirt hills that have been slumping toward the Pacific with emphatic inevitability.I wanted to take this picture to show the larger geological context, which I haven't seen in most news photos of the site. |

Way to feed the stereotype Aaron (Jan 14 2005 23:27 GMT) - I don't have much to say about Prince Harry dressing up in a Nazi uniform. It's been clear for some time he's a bit of a dill, and is acting out a lot. Maybe it's because he lost his Mum,... |

A BIG DRAW (Jan 14 2005 23:27 GMT) - Around noon at Harrah's last Friday, it seemed everyone wanted a spot at the table. It was the first day of the first World Series of Poker Circuit, and it was being held in Atlantic City, of all places. That's right -- the tournament that created poker legends has gone on the road, making stops at a casino near you on the way to a Tournament of Champions that will be held in Las Vegas later this year. That means with as little as $500, some luck and a lot of skill, maybe, just maybe, you could enter into the circuit and score high enough to make it to the big show -- and the $2 million in prize money. Oh, yes, and the television exposure. |

Promoting forums (2) (Jan 14 2005 23:26 GMT) - A good while back I posted a message on promoting forums... I've tried lots of things since then but I hope you don't mind me sharing with you all what I've found to work really well, namely a variation on your typical post exchange. As many of you will be aware, one simple technique is to have a one-to-one post exchange where you post on a board belonging to someone else, in return for them posting on your board. This helps to make a forum look active (maybe more active than it truly is) which is critical for new forums as people will base their decision on whether to join often on activity. One drawback of this, however, is that one such exchange only results in one new, active member. |
