Libraries close book on age of innocence (Jan 17 2005 22:59 GMT) - JET writes that The Scotsman, UK Reports library staff in Scotland have been warned not to put children on their knees during story times for fear they will be branded paedophiles. Staff have also been told not to "lead a child by the hand" out of the library to look for a missing parent under a new policy introduced by education chiefs. As well as protecting employees from "vulnerable situations", the policy also warns librarians to keep an eye out for potential paedophiles and to ask adults acting suspiciously near a children’s area or activity to move on or leave. Library staff will be told to refrain from physical contact where possible, even when they are trying to comfort a distressed or injured child. |

Located in a community compound in west Beijing's Shijingshan District, the Beijing Science Education Library cannot be compared with many public libraries in scale, but it is unique in that it's the first private library in Beijing. Founder and director of the library Pan Yueyong said public libraries have many disadvantages in terms of management and service. "Most public libraries do not open in the evenings. And they're far away from people's homes, which is not convenient for people to borrow and return books. |

A Greater Good - Fines Go Towards Tsunami Relief (Jan 17 2005 22:59 GMT) - York, Maine is one of several towns and cities that have decided to contribute late fees paid by patrons towards tsunami relief. Srinagar's research library: a shame (Jan 17 2005 22:59 GMT) - Harsh Words Out Of India for the research library of the Department of Archives and Archaeology in the Old Secretariat complex. They say it's so bad that it throws up many shocks and it is no surprise that during last one year not a single research scholar has visited the 40-year-old library having around five thousand rare books and manuscripts. In an almirah are utensils of librarians used to prepare tea. In some shelves there are old newspapers. Their condition is very terrible. |

University of Hawaii Conservation experts here this week to help the library begin restoring damaged historic maps and photographs have praised UH staff for freezing the items within days of the Oct. 30 flood that inundated the library basement, said University Librarian Diane Perushek. |
