MSN Spaces supports syndication (Jan 18 2005 15:59 GMT) - Dare Obasanjo reports that the MSN Spaces blog system now supports RSS and Atom - looks like users have a fair bit of control over what they can put out as well. There's another effect here as well - now that Google and MS are both supporting Atom 0.3 format, the eventual release of Atom 1.0 becomes pretty much irrelevant. |

Gracenote to Develop Voice Recognition System for Vehicle Audio (Jan 18 2005 15:59 GMT) - Although it doesn't seem much more than a "gee we'd sure like to be in the news again" move, Gracenote has declared their intention to build a voice-recognition system tailed specifically for navigating through thousands of songs while driving. The idea is to develop a system that can recognize idiosyncrasies in artists' names ('AC/DC,' '311,' KFDFM/GPRS' etc.) and even queue contextual information so finding more music to which to rock could be as easy as 'Computer: All ahead, shred..' It's a fine idea, but with no plans to even show the technology until 2006, other iPod-centric systems could end up supplanting Gracenote's software before it even has a chance to be implemented. |

"Iraq is just one campaign." (Jan 18 2005 15:58 GMT) - Seymour Hersh has a must-read on the un-checked power Bush (and Rumsfeld) now exert over intelligence and covert ops, and what they plan to do with it: George W. Bush’s re-election was not his only victory last fall. The President and his national-security advisers have consolidated control over the military and intelligence communities’ strategic analyses and covert operations to a degree unmatched since the rise of the post-Second World War national-security state. Bush has an aggressive and ambitious agenda for using that control—against the mullahs in Iran and against targets in the ongoing war on terrorism—during his second term. |

Minty MP3 (Jan 18 2005 15:57 GMT) - Well, this isn't exactly a computer case mod, but I liked it anyway: an MP3 player built into an Altoids tin. The Minty MP3 player can be built from parts that are sold at Ye Olde Traditional electronics distributor (digikey/mouser/newark). Half of the parts can be sampled for free, for a minimal... |
