Feature request: Preview sans popup (Jan 18 2005 22:59 GMT) - This might be considered complementary to an elderly feature request to show the whole thread on preview. I'd like to have an option to preview a post without opening a new window. Mozilla with popup blocking doesn't bring up the new window. This probably also affects Firefox and I don't know about other popup-blocking browsers and addons. |

TV on Phones (Jan 18 2005 22:58 GMT) - The Economist writes that both fixed and mobile telecoms operators are getting into television: “The cable companies are entering the telephony market, so the telecoms providers have got to do something,” says Andrew Cole, of A.T. Kearney, a consultancy. In some countries, including France, Italy, Britain and Japan, incumbent operators also face competition from insurgent operators (Iliad, FastWeb, HomeChoice and Yahoo! |

Linux Kernel to be Rewritten? Fiction, Apparently (Jan 18 2005 22:58 GMT) - Some of you may have seen this piece from Maureen O'Gara that details an alleged effort called "Project Open Gates" backed by IBM, Intel and the OSDL among others to rewrite the Linux kernel as a preemptive move against potential Microsoft patent infringements. I'd never heard of it, and for what it's worth both IBM and the ODSL are telling us there's nothing to it. You never know, of course, but for now I'm taking their word for it given that any kernel rewrite would seem to have fairly massive implications - both technically and legally. |

Euphemization of Washington Post (Jan 18 2005 22:58 GMT) - Ethical issues have always been a part of the media. Problems arise though since there are many instances when the thin line between right and wrong is difficult to define. Just when is right right and wrong wrong? Can a wrong be right? Can it be otherwise? |

Five IT headlines you won't see in 2005 (Jan 18 2005 22:57 GMT) - TechRepublic Vice President Bob Artner makes a few anti-predictions for the coming year. For some reason, the beginning of the year brings out the closet prognosticator in many of us, resulting in entirely too many Nostradamus-wannabes unleashing their predictions on an unsuspecting public. I’ll confess to being guilty of doing the same, safe in the knowledge that no one would actually check up to see how my guesses had fared. This year, I’m going to… Direct and Related Links for 'Five IT headlines you won’ |

omaha, and comic book stores in omaha (Jan 18 2005 22:57 GMT) - i was impressed by omaha, what i saw of it. it resembled kansas city a great deal in general appearance downtown. there was a shopping district called, i think, the old market, which was a little like the river market area. we went to a bookstore called antiquarian books, which is really wonderful, a sort of cross between spivey's and the old bookstore whose name i've forgotten that used to be where matsu on westport is now.of course, it's hard to say if there is as much to omaha as meets the eye: |
