Pure Entrepreneurs (Jan 20 2005 01:55 GMT) - Boston Globe has an article by Scott Kirsner: Pure entrepreneurs are loopy and obsessed. They have a vision of the future, and while others are casting their lines into the water to see what will bite, pure entrepreneurs are jumping over the gunwales and swimming after the white whale. Pure entrepreneurship, by my definition, is often driven by a belief that a major shift is coming -- and thus it's hard to find customers who already understand that they need the product a pure entrepreneur is developing. Pure entrepreneurship is often a solo enterprise, funded by credit cards, consulting projects, and second mortgages. |

Return to Nuclear Power (Jan 20 2005 01:54 GMT) - James Lovelock writes: Sir David King, the British Government’s chief scientist, was far-sighted to say that global warming is a more serious threat than terrorism. He may even have underestimated, because, since he spoke, new evidence of climate change suggests it could be even more serious, and the greatest danger that civilization has faced so far. What makes global warming so serious and so urgent is that the great Earth system, Gaia, is trapped in a vicious circle of positive feedback. Extra heat from any source, whether from greenhouse gases, the disappearance of Arctic ice or the Amazon forest, is amplified, and its effects are more than additive. |

The End of Lying? (Jan 20 2005 01:54 GMT) - BBC Technology -- As the British government unveils plans to make lie detector tests mandatory for convicted paedophiles, some scientists in the US are working on more advanced technology which might be better equipped at detecting deception. Imagine the Pentagon equipped with a machine which can read minds. Sound like the plot of a Hollywood thriller? Well, it might not be that far away. The US Department of Defense has given Dr Jennifer Vendemia a $5m grant to work on her theory that by monitoring brainwaves she can detect whether someone is lying. |

Tough Times for Marine Mammals (Jan 20 2005 01:54 GMT) - BBC Environment -- Harbour porpoises are being killed in increasing numbers by bottlenose dolphins around British coasts, possibly due to competition for food. The evidence comes from counts of porpoises washed up on coasts and from post-mortem examination of the animals. A lack of fish may be turning the dolphins on their cetacean relatives, according to some scientists. The findings, from researchers based at London's Natural History Museum, appear in BBC Wildlife magazine. |
