News: AOL Puts A Stake In The Ground (Jan 20 2005 05:59 GMT) - As I worked on my book over the past year or so, AOL was quite significant for its absence. It didn't seem to have a strategy to speak of when it came to search, its focus on its own walled garden of access customers kept it from influencing the broader conversation of web-based search. That all seems to be changing now, as AOL last Fall announced it was opening up its service and was taking a more web-centric approach to its business. First major step seems to be in search: it too is throwing i... |

Libraries with WiFi hotspots around the world (Jan 20 2005 05:59 GMT) - Godfrey Oswald writes "How I love the increasing number of services libraries have been introducing over the last 2 decades. In the very begining libraries provided us only with books and periodicals, then in the 1980s they started providing us with access to CD-ROM databases on computers, as well as allowing us to rent videos to watch at home. In the late 1990s came computers with Internet access (for us to check our e-mails and browse the web), and DVD movies to rent. Imagine this scenario, you are at your local public library typing your project on your laptop or reading a book, and suddenly you need to check your e-mail or browse the web, but the library's computers with Internet access are all fully booked or in use. The solution is to use the WiFi Hotspot in the library (if it has one of course! |

Czechs Join Protest Against Cuban Library Repression (Jan 20 2005 05:59 GMT) - Kent writes "Following upon similar recent actions taken by organizations in Poland and Latvia, the national association of Czech librarians has condemned the persecution of library colleagues in Cuba. Since 1998, approximately 250 independent libraries have been established throughout Cuba in an innovative challenge to government control of information. Many of the uncensored libraries have been raided by the Cuban secret police, their books have been seized or burned, and about 15 of the independent librarians are serving lengthy prison terms. All of the jailed librarians have been named as prisoners of conscience by Amnesty International, which is demanding their immediate release. |

Librarian Filmmakers Program Postponed (Jan 20 2005 05:59 GMT) - InfoWhale writes "Librarian Filmmakers Program Postponed By Steve Fesenmaier Jan. 18, 2005 Thanks to a small article in American Libraries and several postings on media librarian listservs and LisNews, I discovered that there are indeed several librarians other than myself who have worked on films. Everyone knows that there are many librarian-turned-authors, receiving regular coverage in the library press. However, this is the first time that anyone has planned to present films by librarians-turned-filmmaker (or visa versa.) My proposed program for New York Public Library's Donnell Library Center in New York City will NOT be taking place. |
