Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2 probably to be released on March 31 (Jan 23 2005 23:06 GMT) - I had hoped we'd see the bits of Visual Studio 2005 "Whidbey" by the January timeframe, nicely in time for the Developer & IT Pro Days in Belgium on 1 and 2 February, or the VSLive! conference in San Francisco. Unfortunately, it appears that Microsoft has its eyes on a March 31 release date for the new bits, which will be fully supported -- meaning software companies can release production software built with it and enjoy Redmond's support. Beta 2 will have a slightly different API from Beta 1, ASP. |

The Tools of Edward Tufte (Jan 23 2005 23:05 GMT) - Information design guru Edward Tufte has a new book coming out, this one about techniques in evidence presentation. Tufte gained notoriety last year with his essay on PowerPoint. In the notes below Jim McGee makes important points about Tufte's work and approach and asks two good questions -- what tools does Tufte recommend, and what do we do after we learn to recognize the errors he points out? These are questions I will pursue when I attend Tufte's seminar in Atlanta at the end of February.
