Ethel Merman's Broadway (Jan 23 2005 23:23 GMT) - Legit Reviews: Rita McKenzie, in her one-woman tribute to Ethel Merman, quotes the entertainer as saying, "I had that one special quality -- I'm loud!" She consistently maintains that attitude with a gutsy, high-volume vocal and acting approach. McKenzie, who starred in this production Off Broadway, has her character's physical mannerisms down pat, and she reproduces Merman's famous vibrato with raucous authenticity. Her comic timing is less assured, and the uneven script (written with Christopher Powich) too often settles for reverence instead of the savage insight this legendary performer requires. |

Yoper: A next-generation OS? (Jan 23 2005 23:23 GMT) - Yoper Operating System (YOS), or Yoper GNU/Linux if you prefer, was an eye-opener even for someone who has used over fifty GNU/Linux distributions. Everything just seemed to work, and it was as simple as that. Could this be the answer to the Microsoft problem? My name is Preston St. Pierre, and I'm here to tell you about the most surprising experience I have yet had with GNU/Linux: |

Zap Java bugs before they bite with PMD (Jan 23 2005 23:23 GMT) - Even with just its built-in rules (which are quite extensive), PMD will almost certainly find some real problems in your code. Some of them will be minor, but some won't be. PMD, an open source static analysis tool, can be a worthwhile addition to your bug-zapping arsenal. Elliotte Rusty Harold explains how to use PMD's built-in rules and your own custom rule sets to improve the quality of your Java code. |

Who ARE these people? (Jan 23 2005 23:22 GMT) - I haven't felt the blogging urge at the expense of other things during my free time in, oh, a while. But here I am - spurred on by a headline. Survey: Users Confuse Search Results, Ads NEW YORK - Only 1 in 6 users of Internet search engines can tell the difference between unbiased search results and paid advertisements, a new survey finds. The Pew Internet and American Life Project reported Sunday that adults online in the United States are generally naive when it comes to how search engines work. |

In Utah there is no beer (Jan 23 2005 23:22 GMT) - Sorry to obsess so much on one topic, but free beer (as offered at last night's Femme Fatale party) doesn't mean a lot when it takes 25 to have a noticeable effect. Because if Sundance is about anything, it's numbing yourself against the deluge of shmoozing going on. Hey there, hi there, ho there, little campers. Coming to you live from Park City on Eric Campos' shitty dial-up connection, so no pics as of yet, not that I've taken any worth showing. All nakedness has taken place of camera. |

The Rise of a New News Network (Jan 23 2005 23:21 GMT) - Business 2.0 has a commentary by Om Malik: Weblogs, which started out as online diaries, have morphed into reporters' notebooks. The information is raw -- and perhaps unpolished when compared with news from more established outlets -- but it is nonetheless news. I think what we are seeing is the rise of a new kind of news network, thanks in large part to technology. |

Firefox Flies Into Overdrive (Jan 23 2005 23:21 GMT) - So, you love using Firefox and feel that it is the fastest browser a person could possibly need? Personally, I think it is fast, but the fastest? That remains to be seen. Still, I found mention of a cool tweak at The Inquirer that might help to put the browser into overdrive so you can get things moving at a speed that even you will find satisfactory!#8230; |
