The use of images & dialect (Jan 25 2005 23:25 GMT) - I just learned you can watch Santa Cruz TV (Megavisiуn) as an online live feed. I'm watching it now, as ads for various things run between a variety news show. But they just ran an ad, that's part of the "ЎAutonomнa Ya!" campaign that went like this: "We're known for... |

High School Sex Secrets (Jan 25 2005 23:25 GMT) - No, it's not porn. Some researcher (who looks like he would NOT have been included in the chain), mapped out all the relationships at a high school to see what it looked like. Craziness.Makes for good reading. |

FBI Says Reported Boston Terror Threat Was A False Alarm (Jan 25 2005 23:25 GMT) - The FBI said Tuesday that the possible terrorist plot reported against Boston by a tipster last week was a false alarm. A law enforcement official in Mexico said that a suspected smuggler made the story up to get back at people who failed to pay him. "There were in fact no terrorist plans or activity under way," an FBI statement said. "Because the criminal investigation is ongoing, no further details can be provided at this time." Source: |

The Squid and the Whale (Jan 25 2005 23:25 GMT) - Film Reviews: Moment when children discover their parents aren't perfect forms the core of writer-director Noah Baumbach's semiautobiographical tale of two brothers coping with parents' divorce. Pic makes up in strong performances and wry observation what it sometimes lacks in narrative. Should help introduce the gifted Baumbach to a wider audience. |

No on Gonzales (Jan 25 2005 23:25 GMT) - Unprecedented times call for unprecedented actions. In this case, we, the undersigned bloggers, have decided to speak as one and collectively author a document of opposition. We oppose the nomination of Alberto Gonzales to the position of Attorney General of the United States, and we urge every United States Senator to vote against him. As the prime legal architect for the policy of torture adopted by the Bush Administration, Gonzales's advice led directly to the abandonment of longstanding federal laws, the Geneva Convention, and the United States Constitution itself. Our country, in following Gonzales's legal opinions, has forsaken its commitment to human rights and the rule of law and shamed itself before the world with our conduct at Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib. |

A more organized, aggressive Senate caucus (Jan 25 2005 23:25 GMT) - Reid seems to have his shit together:The new session is opening amid signs of uncommon Democratic unity in the Senate. Minority leader Harry Reid of Nevada used a news conference on Democrats' legislative priorities to boast that majority leader Bill Frist, a Tennessee Republican, "wishes every day" that his members were as united as Democrats. For the first time, the 44 Democratic senators are coordinating their media messages through a centralized Senate Democratic Communications Center. The new center has its "war room" in an office on the Capitol's third floor, where staff members send out daily talking points to Democratic press secretaries, line up radio and television interviews with senators, and issue "rapid-response" news releases in the style of political campaigns. |

Boxer the new Wellstone (Jan 25 2005 23:25 GMT) - Is there any doubt that Barbara Boxer is moving aggressively to fill the void left behind by Wellstone's tragic death? It's as if her easy reelection victory (she got the most votes of anyone in 2004 not named Bush or Kerry) gave her the confidence to be more aggressive. Her protest of the Ohio electoral votes and her grilling of Condi Rice gave her instant visibility. She granted an interview to our very own Armando and DavidNYC, showing that her communication people were stepping up their outreach efforts. Her PAC has become more aggressive, using Blogads and viral marketing to garner petition signatures opposing Rice. |

Gonzales' Web of Deceit for Bush Catching Up To Him (Jan 25 2005 23:25 GMT) - It appears that Alberto Gonzales is beginning to get ensnared in his deceptions on behalf of George Bush. There has now been wide coverage of Gonzales' apparent misstatements regarding hs role in getting Bush excused from jury duty in Texas while he was Governor. Now, a bar complaint has been filed against Gonzales in Texas for his deceit: CREW Files Bar Complaint Against Attorney General Nominee Alberto Gonzales Gonzales misrepresented role in assisting President Bush escape jury duty WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed a complaint with the Office of Disciplinary Counsel of the State Bar of Texas requesting an investigation into misrepresentations White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales made in a written response to a question posed to him by the Senate Judiciary Committee which is considering Gonzales's nomination for Attorney General. The complaint alleges that Gonzales inaccurately portrayed his role in appearing before a Texas court when President Bush, then Governor of Texas, was summoned for jury duty. |

White House's slanted wording (Jan 25 2005 23:25 GMT) - This Boston Globe headline states:AARP poll shows skepticism over Bush's plan for personal accountsRead the story though, and Bush's efforts are referred to as "private" accounts seven times. The White House's efforts to cow the press into using their nomenclature appears to be paying off. What's funny, is that the GOP attacks this AARP poll for "slanted wording", when their entire strategy at this point appears to be to run as far away as possible from the word "privatization", and screaming "crisis" at every opportune moment. |
