Bellster, Slashdot, Hotfoon (Jan 25 2005 23:43 GMT) - (Sponsor: Lok Technology) Jeff Pulver's Bellster got Slashdotted on Monday (and so, indirectly, did IPInferno). The result of that is lots of attention to the idea by the right people. "Right" because the /. community is one that tries things and pounds on them and finds out what works and what doesn't. |

Elektra Project 0.4.11 (Default branch) (Jan 25 2005 23:40 GMT) - Elektra provides a universal and secure framework to store configuration parameters in a hierarchical key-value pair mechanism, instead of each program using its own text configuration files. This allows any program to read and save its configuration with a consistent API, and allows them to be aware of other applications' configurations, permitting easy application integration. While architecturally similar to other OS registries, Elektra does not have most of the problems found in those implementations. Changes: This release includes a mature GConf backend with error handling, more secure backend selection methods, and improvements in XML importing. |

Apple not gouging as much on Mac mini upgrades (Jan 25 2005 23:40 GMT) - Once the Apple Online Store was updated to include the Mac mini, it became quite clear that adding a SuperDrive and 1GB RAM would effectively double the price of the unit. Today, Apple has dropped the price of the Built To Order items as follows: 1GB RAM was $475 now $325 Bluetooth and AirPort Extreme were $129 now $99 80GB hard drive was $80 now $50. It still seems like one would get a better deal buying their Mac mini, not from an Apple Store, but from an Apple retailer who can open the case without voiding the warranty and install less expensive non-Apple components without any backtalk. |
