Piano playing and shrink takes (Jan 26 2005 00:54 GMT) - I've been watching lots of old Disney cartoons lately (big surprise!), and something that always stands out for me in these vintage shorts is the care they took to animate playing piano realistically. I've seen so many modern cartoons where the character just randomly bangs on the keyboard, which is usually static (probably painted on the background). But in these old Disney cartoons, Mickey and Minnie are both accomplished pianists! Their hands actually hit the keyboard in the general octave the melody suggests, and the keys themselves actually animate, so you can see chords actually formed. |

Is The Tide Turning Against Spam? (Jan 26 2005 00:54 GMT) - Apparently, spam fighters are feeling generally optimistic lately in the war against spam. A number of legal victories, including Earthlink's victory today, combined with the increasing success of filters, has them hoping that spammers are having serious second thoughts on their chosen careers. I'm still not convinced that things are really changing, but there does appear to be a lot of good news lately in fighting spam -- so maybe things really are moving in the right direction. |

Thanks to Karen Schneider at Free Range Librarian for this marvelous story from a Princeton professor: "Libraries, the Princeton campus's unknown repository of sexiness." The article is quite pro-library, and also pro-librarian (in a "they're really cool" way, without devloving into stereotypes). |

Abuse claims multiplying (Jan 26 2005 00:52 GMT) - The Army launched dozens of investigations into detainee abuses across Iraq in the past two years - probing claims of beatings and torture that rivaled the Abu Ghraib prison scandal - but case after case was closed with U.S. troops facing no charges or only minimal punishment, military records released yesterday show. The documents, internal reports from more than 50 criminal investigations, further refute government claims last year that photographs from Abu Ghraib showed isolated pranks of a few low-ranking soldiers. The new records describe alleged misdeeds at U. |
