Do You Use Personas When You Work on a Site? (Jan 26 2005 01:30 GMT) - Quote: "(One other programmer on the team did recognize Cooper as "the guy who dumped on programmers" with the book about the inmates running the asylum.) After a long talk in which I explained that there was in fact a large and respected body of academic background and real-world practice backing up the consultant's methodolgy, I think he felt a little shook up at least because he began to understand there was a large portion of his professional career about which he was entirely ignorant." Saying there is a "large and respected body" of knowledge and experience backing personas will come back to haunt you if anyone you say it to bothers to investigate the claims. There's no agreement on what personas are, how to make them, or what they're used for. |

The book looks at the social perception that "Prozac (is) elective 'enhancement technology' for normals rather than medical treatment for suffering patients. " And apparently most of the authors who wrote articles for the book agree: "Most assume that [Prozac]...threatens healthy social alienation, authenticity, Emersonian self-reliance, mysticism, |

Edgar Meyer, Chris Thile (Jan 26 2005 01:30 GMT) - Music Reviews: Apparently there is an ample supply of extravagantly gifted musicians who like to pursue freewheeling fusions of acoustic music -- and bassist Edgar Meyer seems eager to collaborate with any and all. In his latest venture, Meyer has joined up with mandolinist Chris Thile of the "newgrass" band Nickel Creek for a 12-city tour, forging and learning a whole new repertoire of graceful, intricate, literate, occasionally rousing music. |

False Gloablism : Protection Rackets (Jan 26 2005 01:30 GMT) - Chuck Talk writes "According to Sara Yirell of Computer Reseller News, Microsoft has filed suit against a VAR in the United Kingdom market for selling what it is calling "parallel import" software. What this actually means is that the company being sued has taken the business-wise step of importing software made in a different global market due to the lower cost. Ms. Yirell apparently received a leaked High Court document that showed that Microsoft has started proceedings to sue Value Added Reseller ITAC (UK) Ltd., as they were importing software from the Middle East, not software Microsoft claims was developed for the United Kingdom. |

Q&A: Ex-HP Executives Form Startup To Deliver Itanium Technologies (Jan 26 2005 01:30 GMT) - [InfoWorld TechWatch] - With some analysts beginning to take a harder look at just how successful the Itanium series of chip can be in an increasingly competitive 64-bit chip market, the arrival of startup Secure64 Software could not come at a better time. The new company, which had its formal coming out party launched on Monday, was founded in 2002 by a group of ex-Hewlett-Packard executives including Bill Worley who was the technical director of PA-RSC and PA-Wor. The latter project eventually evolved into the first generation of Itanium processors. What is driving the company is its belief that there is yet to... |

IBM's Lotus jumps ahead with Notes Domino 7 (Jan 26 2005 01:30 GMT) - [InfoWorld TechWatch] - Both IBM and Microsoft are trumpeting their respective messaging platforms this month and the two roads are diverging. Both vendors a couple years ago drew up big plans for a unified data store across messaging, database, applications, which they promised would simplify data management. Well, IBM has jumped ahead in a piece of that vision. Big Blue confirmed this week that the forthcoming Lotus Notes Domino Version 7 will offer the ability to store Domino data in IBM DB2. Microsoft, meanwhile, earlier this year deferred the WinFS unified storage technology in Longhorn and last week said that the next version... |
