company structure (Jan 26 2005 12:28 GMT) - Hi evvo, I've spent a lot of years looking at State government web sites in the US. The evolution of the sites has been interesting. While they have been slow to change, many of the best of them have changed. At first, each department or agency would have it's own web site, and the main government site would just link to the different offices without informing people of the tasks that those offices performed. Unfortunately, many services are scattered across different agencies, and you almost needed a degree in public service and government to figure out how to perform different tasks. |

The Spacebox (Jan 26 2005 12:27 GMT) - This looks like a cheap version of the Compact Design Living space we saw a few months ago. A crane stacks these guys 3 units high, each unit is complete with a kitchen, shower, and toilet. They look almost Japanese in design, like a capsule hotel. I wonder if these will become popular; maybe... |

The Costs Of Bank (In)security -- Passed On To The Customers (Jan 26 2005 12:27 GMT) - There was an article in the local rag about a theft from the local branch of the Charter One bank. Apparently there was a bag of paperwork and check-deposits waiting for a courier to pick them up. That bag was stolen and absconded with. According to the article: A letter from the bank to customers who made deposits that day at the Wall Street office said the bag contained "branch work for the day" and that the depositors must "obtain replacement items for any check you deposited on January 14, 2005. |

2004 Presidential Transition Condoleezza Rice ... (Jan 26 2005 12:26 GMT) - 2004 Presidential Transition Condoleezza Rice should handily win her confirmation vote today, according to the AP via the Rocky Mountain News [January 26, 2005, "Confirmation of Rice appears certain"]. From the article, "Despite strong Democratic dissent, Condoleezza Rice, President Bush's trusted national security aide and a main architect of his policies on Iraq and the war on terror, appears headed to overwhelming Senate approval as the next secretary of state. Once approved, Rice, 50, will replace Colin Powell and to become the first black woman to serve as the nation's top diplomat. A dozen or so Democrats were lined up to vote against her Wednesday. Probably as many others intended to yield to President Bush's right to pick his own Cabinet even though they, too, harbored serious doubts about Iraq policy. |

Wick Barrow (Folklore by Rhiannon) (Jan 26 2005 12:26 GMT) - Yet another piece of folklore attached to the site - this one to be found in R Evans' 'Somerset stories of the supernatural' (2001) (and noted in Bord's 'Fairy Sites' book). Once it was considered unlucky to traverse the mound. A local man who was protesting against the building of the nuclear power station said that it would be built 'over his dead body'. Out riding in the area (and apparently unaware of its reputation) he rode over the mound. Later he was killed in a fall from his horse. |
